Best ISP in America
Verizon Fios internet review: The best ISP in America
By our analysis, Verizon Fios internet plans grade out as the very best in the country — just a hair ahead of AT&T’s fiber optic plans. Verizon internet packages run exclusively on a fiber network, meaning you’ll get the fastest and most reliable connection possible.
But unlike a lot of providers, with Verizon Fios you won’t have to pay a fortune for that speed. Prices for internet-only plans start at just $40/mo., and your bill won’t go up after a “promotion” period ends. It’s that combination of affordability and performance that earned Verizon home internet the number one spot in this year’s American Customer Satisfaction Index.

How we scored internet providers
We evaluate broadband providers in four categories: affordability, performance, value and customer satisfaction. Each category contains multiple sub-factors, all of which are weighted differently to impact the provider’s overall score.
For each sub-factor, we score all providers on a continuous scale of 1 to 5, relative to the industry as a whole. Because the average download speed in America is currently 180 Mbps, for example, we assigned all plans with download speeds between 100 and 299 Mbps a score between 3 and 4. Xfinity’s 200 Mbps plan received a 3.50 score for download speed, while Spectrum’s 400 Mbps plan got a 4.16.
We only considered standardized data points in our scoring system. More abstract data like consistency of service and brand reputation is still part of our analysis, but we opted to let our writers address them in the context of each review.Learn more about our methodology

Verizon Fios plans, pricing and speeds
Verizon Fios internet plans come with three download/upload speed options: 200/200 Mbps, 400/400 Mbps and up to 940/880 Mbps. If you’ve shopped for Verizon internet packages in the past, you may have seen 100 and 300 Mbps plans instead. Those plans are no longer available as Verizon recently increased their Fios speed tiers (without raising the starting price). While Verizon pricing and speeds may vary based on where you live, a Verizon Fios internet plan is one of your best options without having to sign an annual contract.
|Plan name||Allconnect score||Monthly price||Download speed||Upload speed|
|200 Mbps||3.94/5||$39.99/mo.||200 Mbps||200 Mbps|
|400 Mbps||3.91/5||$64.99/mo.||400 Mbps||400 Mbps|
|Gigabit Connection||4.26/5||$84.99/mo.*||940 Mbps||880 Mbps|
*w/ Auto Pay + taxes & equip. charges
In some areas, like New York City, Verizon automatically upgrades its two cheapest plans without raising the price. So if your address qualifies, you could see speeds of 300 Mbps for $39.99/mo. and 500 Mbps for $64.99/mo. — some of the best internet deals you’ll find anywhere.
200 Mbps recommended for:
- Browsing social media
- Shopping online
- Reading news sites
- Sending emails
Speeds of 200 Mbps can also support online gaming (Google Stadia recommends at least 10 Mbps) and streaming in 4K (FCC recommends at least 25 Mbps). Keep in mind, however, that using Wi-Fi and connecting multiple broadband-hungry devices to your network will slow your speeds, so you may want to consider a faster plan for a more seamless gaming and streaming experience.
400 Mbps recommended for:
- Moderate internet use
- Online gaming
- Streaming videos and music on multiple devices
Offering double the speed than the lower plan for only $25/mo. more, the Fios 400 plan delivers ample speed for the price. If you’ll be using your Wi-Fi connection throughout your home, consider the Fios Router and Wi-Fi extenders for a strong, wall-to-wall connection.
940 Mbps recommended for:
- Heavy internet use
- Online gaming
- Working from home
- Multiple devices online at once
Starting at $89.99/mo., Verizon’s up to 940/880 plan is one of the more affordable gigabit plans out there. Gigabit speeds may be faster than the average household needs, but serious gamers and telecommuters who need a fast, reliable connection will definitely appreciate the added speed.

With Verizon’s Gig plan, customers receive a $200 Verizon Gift Card and a free AMC+ subscription. Expert tip: Any Fios plan gives you a high-speed connection
When it comes to speed and reliability, you really can’t go wrong with any Verizon Fios plans. According to speedtest.net, the average download speed for U.S. households is 194.9 Mbps as of June 2021, which is below what Verizon offers with their lowest Fios plan (200 Mbps).
Equipment, installation, data caps and contracts
Overall, Verizon’s additional fees are relatively customer-friendly compared to other internet providers. Here’s what you can expect to pay in addition to the monthly rates listed above:
- Equipment: Verizon charges $15/mo. for a router. This is slightly higher than other fiber providers — AT&T charges $10/mo. — but equipment is included at no extra cost with the Gigabit Connection plan.
- Installation: Verizon typically charges a $99 setup fee, but it’s currently waived for online orders.
- Data caps: There are no data caps on any Verizon Fios plans, so you won’t have to worry about how much you’re gaming, streaming and downloading.
- Contracts: Verizon Fios doesn’t have any contracts, so you can leave any time without racking up early termination fees. Which is a pro when it comes to Verizon pricing.
Renting vs. buying your router
Renting a wireless router with your Verizon Fios service will cost $15/mo., which is on the pricier side for most internet providers. However, that cost is included if you choose the Gigabit Connection plan. You can also buy or rent any Verizon compatible router, which typically run for around $100. If you do want to invest in your own router, just make sure it can handle the speeds you’re getting with your Fios plan.

Verizon Fios compared to other providers
If you can get Verizon Fios internet in your area, it’s almost always the best option for most people. Here’s how it compares to some other providers that it overlaps service with:
|Provider||Allconnect score||Starting prices||Download speeds||Upload speeds|
|Verizon Fios||4.07/5||$39.99-89.99/mo.*||200-940 Mbps||200-880 Mbps|
|Cox||3.13/5||$29.99-69.99/mo.||10-940 Mbps||3-940 Mbps|
|Optimum||3.65/5||$35.00-45.00/mo.||300-940 Mbps||35-940 Mbps|
|Spectrum||3.50/5||$49.99-109.99/mo.||200-940 Mbps||10-35 Mbps|
|Xfinity||3.53/5||$24.99-299.99/mo.||50-2000 Mbps||3-2000 Mbps|

Verizon Fios is the best internet provider in the country according to our analysis, so it’s no surprise that it beats out its competitors convincingly. Because its prices don’t go up after the first year, you’ll almost always end up paying less for Verizon in the long run and you’ll typically get faster speeds.
Bundling Verizon Fios internet with TV service
Verizon’s Mix and Match packages let you add TV or phone service to any internet plan — essentially what most providers do but with a catchy name. Fios TV packages will add anywhere from $56 to $96 to your monthly bill, and come with 125+ to 425+ channels. One unique perk of Verizon’s TV plans is that it lets you test drive the 425+ channel package for the cheapest price for two months, so you can decide which package is right for you.
Additionally, Verizon has partnered with YouTube TV to add the live TV streaming service to your internet plan. It costs $64.99/mo. and includes over 85 channels. That said, this is the exact same price as it costs to subscribe to YouTube TV on its own, so there’s no real benefit to adding it to your Verizon Fios internet plan.
Verizon Fios internet has one of the best reputations for customer satisfaction of any internet provider in the country. In the latest report from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), Verizon internet shared the number one spot with AT&T. That’s not a blip on the radar, either — Verizon has owned the best score every year since 2015.
Verizon internet isn’t quite as popular with Consumer Reports readers. It earned a 68/100 overall, with lower marks for value and technical support. That said, most internet providers scored poorly there, and Verizon was still ahead of almost every other major provider.
Our take on Verizon Fios internet
It’s hard to beat a fiber optic connection, and the one you get with Verizon Fios is among the best services available. With competitively-priced speed tiers of 200, 400 and 940/880 Mbps, Verizon Fios high-speed internet plan options offer enough variety to accommodate virtually any home. While the equipment fee is a tad higher than average, customers can enjoy unlimited data and contract-free service.
