Northern New Jersey

North Jersey comprises the portions between the Upper Delaware River and the Atlantic Ocean. We’ve included a handful of cities within North Jersey’s geography, as well as some internet statistics such as median download and upload speed and the percentage of that city with access to certain broadband speeds.

North Jersey generally has access to cable, fiber, 5G and satellite internet. Most fiber availability is centered around its more populated areas, such as Newark and Jersey City. Satellite and cable are the most widely available connection types in this area.

Central New Jersey

Central Jersey is the middle region of New Jersey and includes Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex and Somerset counties. We’ve listed a couple of cities within Central Jersey, as well as some internet stats.

Cable and satellite are widely available throughout Central Jersey. Fiber is also available in Central Jersey but is more varied in serviceability. As we mentioned above, fiber in New Jersey is clustered around more populated areas, but Bridgewater Township and New Brunswick see 80% – 100% fiber availability.

Southern New Jersey

South Jersey is located between Pennsylvania, the Lower Delaware River to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Delaware to the south and Central and North Jersey to the north. It’s also part of the Delaware Valley, one of the largest metropolitan regions in the nation. Explore a couple cities in South Jersey, as well as their median internet speeds according to Ookla and what access is available for certain internet speeds.

Like the rest of New Jersey, South Jersey has the most access to cable and satellite. However, it has far less fiber access than Central and North Jersey. As is the norm with fiber, South Jersey’s fiber access is centered around populated areas in the Delaware Valley (which is made up of parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland) as well as areas like Hamilton, Vineland and Hopewell Township.

Internet in New Jersey

The Garden State of New Jersey is synonymous with casinos, with Atlantic City as its coastal jewel. Atlantic City dwellers can expect 100% cable availability within city limits, keeping its nine casinos online day and night.

Farther north and across from New York City, metro Newark boasts the popular neighborhoods of Forest Hill and Ivy Hill, with 80% fiber availability.

New Jersey’s residents enjoy faster download and upload speeds than most of the nation at 279.77 Mbps, compared to the U.S. average speed of 253.34 Mbps.

Cable is available to 96% of the state, with speeds up to 250 Mbps. Gig cable speeds are only available to about 30% of the population of New Jersey.

Fiber is accessible to over half the state with speeds up to 100 Mbps. For faster fiber speeds of 1 gig or more, only 20% of New Jersey addresses are serviceable.

Data privacy

Internet customers in New Jersey have added online protection with the state’s new data privacy law, which went into effect on Jan. 15, 2025. The New Jersey Data Privacy Law gives New Jersey consumers more rights concerning their data and imposes certain requirements on those who process that data (controllers). The law requires data collectors to allow customers to confirm if personal information is being processed. It also allows the consumer to access the data, correct inaccuracies, delete it, opt out of a controller using their personal data or obtain a copy.

This new law offers New Jerseyans more protections regarding their personal data. They can now access and delete their data and opt out of its sale or sharing. These new rights empower consumers to have more control and security in a digital society.

Broadband growth is promising in New Jersey, as the state’s initial proposal on spending federal Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) funds was approved in September 2024.

What internet speed do you need?

The speed you need for your internet plan depends on how many devices are connected to your home network and the types of daily internet activities you engage in. The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) broadband speed standard is another good baseline: 100 Mbps download speed and 20 Mbps upload speed.

New Jersey is working on its broadband expansion initiatives, mainly as part of the federal Internet for All initiative. The state was recently approved to request access to more than $18 million to implement its Digital Equity Plan, which aims to connect residents to affordable, high-speed internet and the tools they need to make the most of their connections.
