Xfinity internet review
Compared to other providers, Xfinity covers more households and has above-average speeds, as seen with its multiple gig plans. On the downside, Xfinity also has more expensive equipment fees and rate hikes than competing providers.
As a provider that deals primarily in cable internet, Xfinity usually won’t get you speeds as fast as fiber internet, but they’re still much higher than DSL or satellite. Xfinity does offer 3,000 or 6,000 Mbps plans, but they are not available to all customers.
In general, Xfinity’s internet plans provide all the speed you’ll probably need at competitive prices. You’ll have to deal with rate increases after 12 or 24 months, but that’s common among internet service providers (ISPs). Xfinity offers seven plans to choose from no matter where you live, so chances are good you’ll be able to find something that fits your needs.
What we like
-
Availability – Xfinity is one of the most widely available providers with service available in the Western, Central/Southern and Northeast regions of the country.
-
No contract options – When you choose an Xfinity no-contract plan, you won’t need to worry about long-term commitments and early termination fees.
-
Great speeds – Xfinity is one of the few providers that offers internet speeds up to 6 Gbps. With the Gigabit Pro plan in select areas, you can reach speeds up to 6,000 Mbps.
Things to consider
-
Hidden fees – Xfinity plans can get pricey once you add on the cost of equipment rentals and TV fees.
-
Promotional rates and EFTs – To get the lowest possible rates, some Xfinity plans require a contract that comes with early termination fees (ETFs). Also watch out for price increases after promotional periods end.
-
Regional pricing – Xfinity prices vary from region to region, so you could end up paying more depending on where you live.
With more than 31 million broadband subscribers in 40 states, Xfinity is the largest internet provider in the U.S. But that popularity doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best around — it’s often just the most available. Xfinity scored around average in every category of our evaluation.

How we scored internet providers
We evaluate broadband providers in four categories: affordability, performance, value and customer satisfaction. Each category contains multiple sub-factors, all of which are weighted differently to impact the provider’s overall score.
For each sub-factor, we score all providers on a continuous scale of one to five, relative to the industry as a whole. Because the average download speed in America is currently 180 Mbps, for example, we assigned all plans with download speeds between 100 and 299 Mbps a score between three and four. Xfinity’s 200 Mbps plan received a 3.50 score for download speed, while Spectrum’s 400 Mbps plan got a 4.16.
We only considered standardized data points in our scoring system. More abstract data like consistency of service and brand reputation is still part of our analysis, but we opted to let our writers address them in the context of each review.
Xfinity internet plans vary by region
Xfinity serves areas of 40 states, making it the largest available cable internet company. Unfortunately, you won’t find the same Xfinity internet plan pricing and term agreement requirements everywhere. Some locations may have a higher price than others for the same internet speed tier. Furthermore, contract requirements can differ by region, meaning opting for no contract in one region may come with a price increase you wouldn’t see in another.
Pricing isn’t completely random, however, as Xfinity groups its plans into three regions of the country: the West, Central and Northeast. But no matter where you live, you can expect your monthly bill to go up by $15 to $49 after the first year. In some cases, the discount last for two years, and then increases dramatically in the third.
Xfinity plans also include:
- Wi-Fi equipment for 24 months in select regions.
- Two-year price guarantee.
- $20 to $30 off your internet bill, depending on your plan, for 24 months with an active Xfinity Mobile line.
- 6000 Mbps is available in limited areas of the Central region, with 2000 or 3000 Mbps available in parts of the Northeast and West regions.
- Term agreements: The two smallest plans, 50 and 100 Mbps, have one-year agreements, the 300 to 1200 Mbps plans have no agreements and there are two-year agreements for the 2000 to 6000 Mbps plans

Shop Xfinity Internet, TV, and Phone plans
Xfinity offers a variety of plans for internet, TV and phone.

Xfinity deals and promotions
New Xfinity customers can get 200 Mbps internet on Xfinity’s 10G Network for just $25/mo., equipment included, for one year.
Xfinity also offers Xfinity Rewards for its customers. Rewards members can get special perks, unique experiences, product benefits and more.
For Xfinity’s short-term promotions, you can follow on Allconnect’s monthly internet deals page.
Xfinity Internet Essentials program
With the Internet Essentials program, Xfinity is helping in the battle against the digital divide. Qualifying households can get 50 or 100 Mbps speed plans for free when paired with the Affordable Connectivity Program.
Installation, contracts and data caps
You can expect fees, contracts and data limits from nearly every provider, but where some providers have set terms and conditions, Xfinity does a good job of giving customers options.
Installation: $40 or free self-installation
Xfinity charges a one-time fee of $40 if you want to have a professional come to your home to set up your internet. But you can also choose the free self-installation option, where Xfinity sends you a Getting Started kit and you set up service on your own using the Xfinity app.
Term agreements: Varies with plan size
The two smallest plans, 50 and 100 Mbps, have one-year agreements, the 300 to 1200 Mbps plans have no agreements and there are two-year agreements for the 2000 to 6000 Mbps plans.
Another option if you are looking for no contracts and cheap internet is the Xfinity Prepaid Internet plan. With this plan, you get refurbished internet equipment for a one-time fee of $35 and 20 Mbps for $45/mo. or $15/week. This plan does not require any contracts.
Data cap: Varies, but probably 1.2TB with unlimited available
Like their internet pricing, Xfinity data caps can vary by location, but the most common one we’ve seen is 1.2TB/mo. This is a pretty standard data cap; AT&T, CenturyLink and Cox have the same cap on many of their plans. It’s also a lot of data, much more than the average household will need.
Those who like to binge-stream TV, especially in HD or 4K resolution, are more likely to approach the 1TB/mo. data cap, and going over could add fees up to $50 to your bill. Fortunately, you can add unlimited data to your plan for an additional $30/mo., or get it included with the xFi Complete Wi-Fi package.
Xfinity’s advanced Wi-Fi equipment and features
Xfinity stands out among internet providers when it comes to its home Wi-Fi equipment, phone app and mobile hotspots. Here’s what’s available to Xfinity internet customers.
xFi Gateway: $14 – $15/mo. or free in select regions
The xFi Wi-Fi device has some nifty features such as free internet security and app-controlled device management. It’s included with many plans in select areas for the first 24 months, but after that it will add $14/mo. to your bill. And if you want elite Wi-Fi service, which includes modem, router, security and Wi-Fi extenders, Xfinity’s xFi Complete costs $15/mo.
The good news is you don’t have to use Xfinity’s equipment. If you have a router compatible with Xfinity internet, you can use your own and skirt the equipment fee altogether. Going that route, however, may limit the abilities of Xfinity tech support should you have an issue with your service.
Xfinity app
Most internet providers have an app, but Xfinity’s is actually useful. You can use it to check your connection, restart your modem, check your internet security status and even set parental controls for specific devices.
Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots
As an Xfinity customer, you’ll have access to millions of their hotspots around the country. Once you connect to one by signing into your Xfinity account, you can automatically connect to Wi-Fi whenever you’re out of the home and in an Xfinity service area, a nice perk that helps you save your cellphone data.
Xfinity internet vs. top competitors
If your address is serviceable for Xfinity, you may have additional internet options in your area. Here’s a look at how Xfinity compares to major fiber internet providers. Check out how it compares to some of the other providers it overlaps with.
Provider | Allconnect score | Starting prices | Download speeds | Upload speeds |
---|---|---|---|---|
Xfinity | 3.54/5 | $9.95-299.95/mo. | 50-6,000 Mbps | 10-6,000 Mbps |
AT&T Fiber | 4.43/5 | $55.00-180.00/mo. | 300-4,700 Mbps | 300-4,700 Mbps |
Frontier Fiber | 4.16/5 | $49.99-154.99/mo. | 500-2,040 Mbps | 500-2,000 Mbps |
CenturyLink Quantum Fiber | 3.96/5 | $49.00-65.00/mo. | 100-940 Mbps | 100-940 Mbps |
Verizon Fios | 4.42/5 | $39.99-89.99/mo. | 300-2,000 Mbps | 300-2,000 Mbps |

Xfinity internet and TV bundles
If you want to include TV service with internet, Xfinity’s bundles are some of the most affordable internet and TV packages around, especially if you don’t need every channel. All customers get $10/mo. off their bill for each service they bundle with Xfinity.
You can add a basic lineup with 10+ local networks, the Starter package with 140+ channels or the top package with 240+ channels. Xfinity also has home phone or cellphone service that you can add to the mix. In general, you can expect to add around $10 to $40 to your bill if you want to include TV service.
Xfinity customer service: Average
The American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) scored Xfinity internet 73/100 in 2023 for their fiber service, behind Verizon, Google and AT&T. Their ranking against non-fiber providers was middle of the pack at 68/100.
While these scores aren’t amazing, Xfinity does have a reputation for being more flexible than other providers about the deals they offer to existing customers. If you have an issue with your bill or service, there’s a decent chance that a phone call to Xfinity’s customer service can solve the issue.
Xfinity is a good choice for internet
Looking at affordability, availability and plan choice, Xfinity is a solid pick for your internet service. Internet plans that start around $25/mo. for up to 200 Mbps in some areas is a great deal, with enough speed to keep most small households comfortably online.
Xfinity is also the largest cable provider and can be found in 40 states, which makes it more available than most providers. Customers also have the option to bundle other services with their internet plan, like Xfinity TV.
