What does unlimited internet actually mean?
Unlimited internet service means you can use as much data as you need without worrying about a data cap.
A data cap is a restriction from your internet service provider (ISP) on the amount of data you can use within a certain time period, usually one month.
Data caps vary by provider, but once you surpass your data cap for the month, you could be charged a fee, forced to buy more data or your service could be slowed (throttled) or even shut off until your cycle renews.
It’s important to read the fine print of your ISP’s data policy, even if it’s advertised as unlimited. Your provider may claim it has no “hard” data limits, which means it won’t completely cut off your connection if you exceed your data allotment, but it will instead throttle your speeds until your cycle renews or you buy more data.
How to choose an unlimited internet plan
Before you pick an unlimited internet plan, decide what speed you need and how much monthly data you plan to use.

Who shouldn’t consider unlimited internet?
Unlimited internet isn’t for everyone. While it provides great value and it won’t hurt to get an unlimited internet plan, it may not be worth it for some — or even available.
Internet providers don’t provide service to everyone, so getting an unlimited internet plan may not even be an option for you if one isn’t available at your location. Always enter your address when exploring providers so you are aware of what you have access to before you decide.
If you don’t use a lot of data to begin with, having an unlimited internet plan may not make much of a difference.
Another factor to consider with unlimited internet plans is speed throttling. Speed throttling is a common caveat with unlimited plans that providers use to limit your data or incur more fees on the user. Since your data isn’t being turned off, the provider can still claim you have unlimited data regardless of whether it’s high-speed or not.
If you pick a plan with a data limit, remember that exceeding your data limit on a non-unlimited plan will result in overage fees or throttling anyway, so this is only a viable option if you are consistent and can manage your data usage.
