Frontier introduced its 5 Gig Fiber plan in early 2023. It is available in 15 of the 25 states in its footprint. For expert gamers and intensive work-from-home tasks, it’s hard to beat a 5 Gig fiber connection with symmetrical download and upload speeds of up to 5,000 Mbps.

Frontier says with its 5 Gig Fiber plan you can download a 100-minute 8K movie in less than two minutes, an HBO Max™ TV series episode in less than a minute and the Call of Duty video game in about three minutes.

To put that into perspective for you, downloading a video game can take about three hours with a sub-100 Mbps internet plan.

Frontier’s 5 Gig plan compared to the fastest available competitor options

If you live in Frontier’s service area, you may have a choice of Spectrum, Xfinity and/or Optimum fiber service. 

Only Xfinity offers a comparable fiber plan to Frontier 5 Gig. Xfinity’s Gigabit Pro 3,000 Mbps plan is ultra-fast, but also very pricey at nearly $300/mo. Xfinity’s gig plans have a two-year required agreement, and they do come with a data cap, although it is pretty generous at 1.2 TB. You can power a complete smart home with 6 to 8 internet users, without gaming or meeting lag with this powerful plan.

If you have a home of 3 to 4 heavy-internet users, consider Spectrum’s Gig 1,000 Mbps* internet plan. With up to 35 Mbps* upload speed, it can support them simultaneously gaming and working from home. The cost is a bit easier to handle as well at $89.99/mo., with no data caps or contracts required. 

Optimum also offers a similar 1 gig plan with download speeds up to 940 Mbps and a 35 Mbps upload speed.

Our final thoughts

Having no worries about buffering or lagging as you host a huge video meeting or meet your friends on the Call of Duty battlefields is a great feeling that having a 5 Gig internet plan can give you. If you have a household of many people with those requirements, then Frontier’s 5 Gig internet is for you.

However, if you have just 3 to 4 people accessing the internet, you might be able to save some money by going with a 1 Gig or even a 500 Mbps plan.
