What is Cox Gigablast?

Cox Gigablast is a Cox internet package that delivers speeds up to 1,000 Mbps or “1 Gig.” With internet speeds this fast, you can connect more devices and enjoy more online activities.

Cox internet is available in 19 states, but its Gigablast plan is available only in limited areas within Cox’s service footprint. Gigablast runs on a fiber optic network and has a data cap of 1.25 TB/mo., but this is usually more than enough data for most users.

Another benefit of Cox Gigablast is access to free security and antivirus software. Keep in mind, however, that although Cox’s 1 Gig plan starts below $100/mo., after the first year the price will increase by around $20/mo.

When shopping for internet service, you’ll want to compare service between providers and the plans each provider has to offer. Here’s a look at how Cox Gigablast compares to similar plans from other providers and to other Cox internet plans.

How Cox Gigablast compares to other Gig plans

Nearly every major cable or fiber provider offers a gigabit plan. Cox’s version of gigabit service is fairly similar to other providers in many ways.

• Starting price: $99.99/mo. is a little higher than most. Some providers offer gig service for around $80/mo.
• Speeds: 1000 Mbps download is comparable to the competition; 35 Mbps upload is not. Providers like CenturyLink offer equal upload and download speeds of 940 Mbps.
• Data caps: 1.25 TB/mo. is higher than most providers with a data cap, but many like Spectrum, Verizon and AT&T do not have data caps.
• Equipment cost: $10.99/mo. is lower than most device rental fees and there’s an option to use your own.

Final take

While Cox Gigablast is Cox’s fastest internet plan, it falls short compared to other providers’ gigabit plans. Unlike other providers like AT&T or CenturyLink, Cox’s Gigablast plan does not have symmetrical download and upload speeds. Gigablast also has some hefty price increases in the second year.

If you’re looking for the best fiber gigabit plan on the market, you will probably be better off with another provider — but if you’re satisfied with its gigabit speeds, then it’s still a decent fiber option.
