Top Cox service areas

Cox is available in 18 states, but their service areas do not cover the entirety of each state they operate in. In most states, Cox availability is primarily reserved to metro and suburban areas.

For example, Cox is the main cable provider in San Diego and Santa Barbara, CA, but is unavailable in other CA cities such as Fresno and San Francisco. Some cities, such as Cleveland, OH and Washington, D.C., will have Cox availability just outside the city.

Cox cable vs. fiber availability

Cox is largely a cable internet and TV provider, but they have added fiber optic technology to their network and have expressed intent to further expand their fiber footprint.

If you’re in a Cox service area, your chances of cable internet being available are much higher than fiber. According to the latest FCC data, Cox’s cable network is available in 98% of their service areas whereas fiber is only available in 4%.

Why does it matter if it’s a cable or fiber network?

Regardless of whether you’re in a Cox cable or fiber optic area, download speeds will be about the same. Both cable and fiber networks support Cox Gigablast, which offers speeds up to 940 Mbps.

The difference is upload speeds and speed reliability. On Cox’s fiber network, upload speeds are typically the same as download speeds, while upload speeds max out around 30 Mbps on Cox’s cable network.

Fiber optic internet is also less susceptible to slowed speeds during peak usage times than cable internet.

What states can you get Cox Cable?

Cox offers home services in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and Virginia.

What if Cox is not available in my area?

Don’t worry, there are likely multiple other internet and TV providers that are. Other cable providers such as Mediacom, Spectrum and Xfinity, or DSL and fiber-optic providers like AT&T, CenturyLink or Verizon may be available.

Does Cox internet include Wi-Fi?

To get Wi-Fi service with Cox internet, you’ll need a modem and router, which is not included with Cox plans. You can rent the Cox Panoramic Wi-Fi router for an additional monthly fee, or use your own compatible equipment.

Can you save more when you bundle Cox?

Cox offers steep discounts for bundling internet, Contour TV, home phone and home security services, up to $50 or more off the monthly price. Keep in mind, however, that once the introductory pricing ends, typically after one year of service, bundle savings are likely to reduce significantly.
