Why choose Mediacom internet?

At Allconnect, we work to present quality information with editorial integrity. While this page may contain offers from our partners, our opinions are our own. Here’s how we make money.
Mediacom is the fifth largest cable internet provider in the U.S., offering high-speed internet across 22 states, many in the Midwest and South. If you’re in or moving to a Mediacom service area, you may be wondering if Mediacom is right for you, and if so, which plan is best for your home. We cover everything you need to know about Mediacom internet below to help you decide.
What we like
Fast speeds – Gigabit speeds are available in 94% of Mediacom service areas, according to the FCC.
Wi-Fi 360 – Extends your Wi-Fi range to boost connectivity throughout your home.
High data allowances – With data caps up to 6,000GB, Mediacom has some of the highest data allowances we’ve seen (that aren’t unlimited).
Bundles and save – Bundles available with Mediacom TV.
Things to consider
One-year contract – Your plan is likely to come with a one-year contract, and changing or canceling your service before it’s up could result in an early termination fee.
Activation fee – Granted, it’s a low, one-time fee of $10, but it’s a fee that we don’t see from most providers.
High data allowances – Price on standalone internet increases after 12 mos.

Choosing a Mediacom plan
Like most cable internet providers, Mediacom offers a variety of internet plans. Finding the right one for your home depends on what you plan to use the internet for, how many people/devices will be connected and what you’re willing to pay for service.
Internet Access 60 – Cheapest plan
Starting at just $19.99/mo.* this is the cheapest Mediacom plan. While these speeds can support streaming, they’re more ideal for email and browsing the web, especially considering the low 60GB/mo. data cap.
Internet 60 – Still cheap, but with more data
You’ll get the same speeds as the Internet Access 60 plan, but more than six times the data (400GB/mo.), which makes streaming a bit more practical.
Internet 100 – A standard internet connection
100 Mbps is enough speed for most internet use, including streaming in HD or 4K, but you may want faster speeds if you’ll be doing it over a Wi-Fi connection on multiple devices.
Internet 200 – More speed for streaming and gaming
Perfect for roommates and couples with different entertainment preferences, 200 Mbps is a sharable speed for streaming or gaming on multiple devices at once
Internet 500 – Great for families
Speeds of 500 Mbps are all-but-guaranteed to satisfy a family of streamers and gamers. If you want added peace of mind that there’s always enough speed to go around, consider upgrading to gigabit service.
Internet Gig – Best value
Mediacom’s Internet Gig plan gives you the most speed for the money. If you planned on spending a little extra for faster speeds, we recommend treating yourself to the extra speed you get with Mediacom’s gigabit plan.
*Pricing per month plus taxes for length of contract. Additional fees and terms may apply. Pricing varies by location and availability. All prices subject to change at any time. May or may not be available based on service address. Last updated 12/16/20.
What else do you get with Mediacom internet?
- Free internet security software – Protect up to five of your connected devices with Total Defense™ Internet Security Suite, included at no extra cost
- Free Xtream Wifi Hotspots – Access to hundreds of hotspots in 10 major cities
- Round the clock assistance – 24/7 access to customer service and technical support
Mediacom internet equipment, data caps and fees
Taxes and fees will come with any internet service, but the good news for Mediacom customers is that the added fees aren’t anything too extreme. In fact, you’ll find Mediacom’s fees and data caps to be more favorable than many other large providers.
Mediacom internet equipment
- Modem rental fee: $12/mo. You can use your own compatible equipment to avoid this fee.
- Xtreme Wi-Fi 360: $5/mo.
- Wi-Fi extenders: $2.99/mo.
Most internet service providers have equipment fees that hover around the $10 mark, so Mediacom is offering industry-average pricing for their modem rental.
Xtreme Wi-Fi 360 is an optional, enhanced Wi-Fi service designed to extend Wi-Fi coverage to places where a single router won’t always reach, such as far corners of the house or separate floors. Electing to upgrade your Wi-Fi service will add $5/mo. to your bill, plus $2.99/mo. for any Wi-Fi extenders that you may need, but it’s nice to have the option to expand your Wi-Fi reach if necessary.
Mediacom data caps
About half of the top internet service providers have some type of data limit. (See full list here.) However, apart from the two 60 Mbps plans, Mediacom’s data caps are the same or higher than other providers. The 1,000GB/mo. (equal to 1TB), that comes with Internet 100 is already significantly more than the average household will use in a month, and the 6,000GB/mo. included with Internet Gig is virtually unobtainable.
Put another way, even if you were to stream HD video for 24 hours a day for a full 30 days, your data use would still only be just over 2,000GB.
Additional Mediacom internet fees
- Data overage fee: $10 for each 50GB block
- Activation fee: $10
- Early Termination Fee: Up to $240 for two and three-year agreements and up to $120 for one-year agreements
Many Mediacom plans do not require a contract, but if you do have one it’d be in your best financial interest to avoid canceling service before the contract expires. Otherwise, you could incur an Early Termination Fee of up to $120 or more.
