Are you eligible to cancel your AT&T service?

If you’re ready to cancel AT&T internet service, you’ll need to do it over the phone (in most cases). Fortunately, it’s a pretty straightforward process, as we’ve outlined below. Here’s how to cancel AT&T internet:

When you sign up for an AT&T internet plan, it’s important to know you’re agreeing to a service commitment. You’ll be charged an early termination fee (ETF) if you disconnect your service more than 14 days after activation and you have a term commitment. The ETF is prorated and decreases for each month you have AT&T service.

Your ETF will depend on how long you had AT&T service. If you cancel within 14 days of activation, there is no ETF. If you cancel after one month of service, the fee is $180. If you cancel after 12 months, you’ll be charged $15/mo. for each remaining month of service. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to waive these ETFs, but you can always try explaining your situation to an AT&T customer support representative.

Ways to cancel your AT&T service

Canceling your AT&T service over the phone

In the majority of cases (with the exception outlined above), you’ll have to contact the company by phone to cancel AT&T internet. You’ll also need to be the main account holder to initiate the cancellation process.

Here’s how to cancel AT&T via phone:

• • Call AT&T at (800) 288-2020 during normal business hours
• • Follow the prompts to submit your cancellation request

If you call outside of standard operating hours, your request will be processed on the following business day.

Canceling your AT&T service in person

Although AT&T has physical stores around the country, these locations primarily focus on wireless plans (but you can purchase internet packages as well). Contact your local store to find out if you can cancel in person.

Pausing AT&T service

In some situations, pausing your subscription might make more sense than trying to have AT&T disconnect the service. For example, if you’re going on a cross-country road trip or simply need a few months to catch up on bills, you might consider putting a temporary hold on your account rather than terminating your contract and needing to sign up again.

How to return your AT&T equipment

After you’ve filed your formal cancellation, don’t forget to return any equipment to AT&T. If you’ve rented an internet device like a router, you’ll have 21 days to send it back via UPS or FedEx (AT&T stores can’t accept returned internet equipment). Otherwise, you’ll be charged a $150 non-return fee. If you’ve paid this fee and send back your equipment within six months of cancellation, you’re eligible for a refund.

Note: Make sure you don’t remove or return wall-mounted AT&T equipment (including the power cord). Contact the company for next steps if you have any of this equipment.
