How to use the speed test for Kinetic by Windstream

Follow these steps to ensure you are getting an accurate speed test result.

1. Reset your modem (optional). Unplug your modem, wait a few seconds and plug it back in to reset it. Note: This step may only be necessary if you haven’t reset your modem recently. It is not necessary to reset your modem each time before starting the test.
2. Connect your computer directly to your modem using an Ethernet Cat5e or higher cable. If you have separate modem and router devices, make sure your cable is plugged into the modem, not the router.
3. Disconnect any other devices from your network. This includes Wi-Fi connected devices such as cellphones, laptops, smart TVs and gaming consoles.
4. Click “Start Testing Speed” to begin your speed test.

Once you press go, we’ll first work to determine where you’re located in relation to the nearest server. The test sends a ping to the server and will use that to measure.

Next, we’ll start an upload and download test to see just how fast your network is transmitting data back and forth (and how hard it’s working to do so). Make sure to disconnect all other internet-connected devices before you conduct your test for the best and most accurate results.

Factors that may affect your Windstream speed

Your Kinetic internet speeds utilize a DSL internet connection so it uses the existing phone lines in your home to deliver you the speeds you’ve been promised. However, a few things will affect your quality of service:

• The quality of your phone line 
• The distance between your home and the provider hub
• Equipment (router and modem) that’s incompatible with internet speeds
