About Hughesnet Fusion

In late 2022, Hughesnet launched Fusion, a new satellite internet option that uses satellite and wireless internet technology to produce a high-speed, low-latency internet connection. 

Satellite internet is notorious for high latency during activities such as watching videos, working from home or surfing content-rich websites because of the massive distance between the satellite and your device.

Instead of relying solely on a satellite in space, Fusion customers are switched to adjacent wireless networks while doing latency-sensitive activities, giving Fusion customers a faster internet experience.

Equipment and fees

Fusion has some hefty equipment fees since it combines satellite and wireless tech. Fusion equipment includes the same equipment you’d need for regular Hughesnet satellite service (a satellite dish and a modem) and an additional multipath device that enables you to connect to nearby wireless networks.

Hughesnet Fusion vs. the competition

When comparing Hughesnet Fusion to other satellite-only internet providers like Viasat and Starlink, there aren’t many disparities in availability and price. Starlink and Viasat offer faster speeds and higher data caps, but Fusion’s hybrid technology offers low latency.

Compared to fixed wireless providers like Verizon and T-Mobile, Hughesnet is far more expensive and offers much slower speeds — but Hughesnet has them beat in terms of availability.

Hughesnet Fusion FAQs

Does Hughesnet have unlimited internet?

Hughesnet does not enforce hard data limits, which means Hughesnet will not completely suspend your service if you go over your monthly data allowance. Instead, you will experience reduced speeds until you purchase more data or use the internet during a Hughesnet “Bonus Zone,” which gives you 50 GB more data between the hours of 2 a.m. and 8 a.m.

Satellite internet relies only on satellite internet technology to bring you your internet connection, but Fusion combines satellite and wireless internet technology. Fusion has lower latency than satellite-only internet, so activities such as video streaming will feel faster with Fusion.

Hughesnet Fusion is a great internet option for those living in rural areas. While it is not the fastest or cheapest internet option, Hughesnet has wider availability than many other internet providers.

The Hughesnet service term is 24 months. If you cancel after activation but before the end of your 24-month commitment, you will be charged an Early Service Termination Fee of up to $400, which, after 90 days of service, decreases by $15 per month. In addition, once your service is canceled, even after the 24-month term, you must return equipment in good condition within 45 days of the cancellation date to avoid an Unreturned Equipment Fee of $300. This includes the satellite radio, Wi-Fi modem, power cords and wireless antenna. In addition, you must return the equipment in good condition within 45 days of the cancellation date to avoid an un-returned equipment fee of $500, even after the 24-month term. This includes the satellite radio, Wi-Fi modem, Multipath device, both power cords and wireless antenna.
