What is a SignalTech Wifi Booster?
Anyone with Wi-Fi in their home has almost certainly run into the problem of a weak signal. While routers provide the flexibility of a wireless internet connection, sometimes they simply fail to stretch the signal as far as you would like, resulting in you needing to stay closer to the router.
Enter the SignalTech Wifi Booster. This little device makes some big promises that have increasingly caught the attention of people who have run into the problem of dead zones with their wireless internet connection.
The SignalTech Wifi Booster claims to be able to stretch the Wi-Fi connection to reach all corners of your home. With a simple setup, ease of use, and an extended internet connection with no interference, the SignalTech Wifi Booster might just sound like the ideal solution to your internet problems.
Not so fast, though.
First, it’s important to understand what the SignalTech Wifi Booster actually is because the name can be a little misleading. A Wi-Fi booster is a sort of catch-all term that is used to describe devices that are intended to improve your wireless internet connection. SignalTech also uses the term Wi-Fi extender in describing this device, using it interchangeably with the term booster. A Wi-Fi extender helps to extend the coverage area of your wireless network by essentially adding a second router to your home. This provides a reliable connection where a standard router might not reach.
What the SignalTech Wifi Booster appears to be is actually a Wi-Fi repeater. A Wi-Fi repeater is conceptually very similar to the Wi-Fi extender in terms of the end result: it takes your existing wireless signal and broadcasts it to reach a wider range.
However, there is a significant difference between an extender and a repeater. A Wi-Fi extender rebroadcasts your wireless signal on a new channel, while a Wi-Fi repeater uses the same frequency — and does so wirelessly. Repeaters offer convenience and can move around as needed because they are wireless. But, the technique used by the repeater is typically considered inferior and may result in limited bandwidth and a higher latency connection. It can also easily be interfered with by other wireless signals.
How well does the SignalTech Wifi Booster work?
Because of the confusion in the branding of the SignalTech Wifi Booster, it’s a little challenging to properly set expectations for the device. From the documentation provided by SignalTech, the Wifi Booster appears to be a Wi-Fi repeater, which means it is easy to move around and stretch the reach of your wireless connection.
However, you should note that the connection quality may be suspect and prone to disruptions. SignalTech promises “fast and stable wireless connection with speeds up to 300 Mbps,” but some research suggests Wi-Fi repeaters cut download speeds in half.
How much is the SignalTech Wifi booster and where can you buy it?
The Signaltech Wifi Booster is available through Signaltech’s website. The listed retail price is $80, plus $6.99 for shipping. The company frequently runs a 50% off sale, and you can buy the Wifi Booster in bundles of 2, 3, or 4 at a discount. One booster will run you $39.95, plus shipping, with your 50% discount.
It is also for sale on Walmart.com for considerably less at $19.99.
The bottom line
There are lots of options for Wi-Fi boosters, including extenders and repeaters that can get the job done for you and provide reliable internet speeds throughout your home. What works best for you will depend on your situation.
In general, Wi-Fi boosters can be useful tools for those who live in homes that suffer from internet dead zones. Wi-Fi extenders are great for providing consistent, high-speed coverage in areas of your home that otherwise don’t get a good signal. Wi-Fi extenders can be useful short-term solutions for stretching your network to distant parts of your house or even outside, but can suffer from a worse signal quality and slower internet speeds.
