RCN provider overview
Editor’s note: RCN announced plans in January 2022 to transition to Astound Broadband. Regional providers will retain their name, with RCN becoming Astound Broadband Powered by RCN. Branding changes to the company’s website are expected to follow.
RCN is available to more than five million residents, making it one of the largest cable providers in the U.S. Depending on your location and which RCN internet plan you choose, your connection could include a cable, fiber optic or DSL connection, or a hybrid or multiple network types.
What we like
No data caps – RCN internet does not have data caps, so you don’t have to worry about added fees and throttling for going over a monthly data limit.
Whole home Wi-Fi – Sends Wi-Fi throughout your home for a convenient, reliable connection. Wi-Fi equipment is available to rent or included with select plans.
No contracts – RCN plans require no contract to get introductory pricing or special offers, so you aren’t locked into a long-term commitment.
Things to consider
Pricing and speeds depend on location – RCN internet plans in separate markets may be priced differently, even for similar speeds. Plus, the RCN Gig plan may not be available in all locations.
Availability – RCN has limited coverage, which is mainly confined to metro areas in D.C., Chicago, Boston, New York and Philadelphia.
Channel lineup – RCN’s top cable TV package offers about 298+ channels, less that providers such as Verizon or DIRECTV that offer 425+ and 330+ channels respectively.
