Tuition Waiver for Purple Heart Medal Recipients
Public institutions of higher learning in the State of Alabama, including two-year and four-year postsecondary technical colleges, community colleges, and junior colleges, may waive tuition and fees for recipients of the Purple Heart Medal for undergraduate studies.
Discounted Fishing License
Alabama resident veterans who are at least 20% disabled can get a discounted freshwater fishing license.
Disabled Veteran Special Hunting License
A special hunting license is available to 100% service-connected veterans at a cost of $2 plus the applicable issuance fee (subject to a possible cost adjustment). A special hunting license is available to 50% service-connected veterans at half of the usual cost plus the applicable issuance fee
Retired Military Pistol Permit
A pistol permit is available for free to individuals who are otherwise eligible for a pistol permit and who retired from active duty the Reserves, or National Guard.
Alaska Railroad Discount
The Alaska Railroad offers a 20% discount to active duty, military retirees and dependents. ID showing proof of status must be shown at boarding.
Alaska Marine Highway System
A reduced fare pass is available for travel on Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) vessels for U.S. veterans having a service-connected veteran’s disability. The pass entitles the disabled veteran and an attendant (if required by a physician) to travel at half the regular passenger fare. Reduced fare does not include vehicle or stateroom. The pass is valid for travel between Alaskan ports on all AMHS vessels, year-round.
Hunting and Fishing Licenses for Active Duty
Active members of the Alaska National Guard and Alaska military reserves stationed in the State of Alaska who meet residency requirements may receive a free hunting and sport fishing license. Members of the military service who are on active duty permanently stationed in Alaska, or a dependent of a member of the military service on active duty permanently stationed in Alaska, and who have met residency requirements may apply for military licenses at the time of license application and pay the same rate as a resident.
Disabled Veteran Hunting and Fishing License
Disabled Veteran resident hunting and sport fishing licenses are available at no charge to honorably discharged veterans with a 50% or greater service-connected disability and Alaska residency. Applicants must have lived in Alaska for 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the application.
State Camping Pass for Disabled Veterans
The legislature granted Disabled Veterans (DAV) the right to receive one Alaska State Park Camping Pass free of charge. The DAV Camping Pass, which is valid in all developed Alaska State Park campgrounds and is good for two years. See more.

Hunting and Fishing Licenses
Resident hunting and fishing licenses for members of the armed forces on active duty, stationed in the state are available upon application. Complimentary licenses will be issued to veterans verified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to be one hundred percent service-connected disabled and who has been a resident for one year or more. Arizona State Parks
Arizona State Parks Offers provides Arizona’s 100% permanently disabled veterans with a complimentary “Disabled Veterans Annual Day Use Pass”. The pass allows qualified veterans with day-use access to all twenty-seven State Parks.
Tuition and Fees-Deferred Payment
A veteran or eligible dependent who has applied for educational benefits under the G. I. Bill at state-supported community colleges, colleges and universities may defer payment of tuition, fees and required books for up to 120 days with no interest charges. Extensions of this time limit are available.

Free Tuition for Dependents
Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE) has the authority to provide free tuition and fees at any state-supported college, university, technical school, or vocational school; to the wife and children of any Arkansan who has been declared to be Prisoner of War or placed in a missing-in-action status since January 1, 1960. The same provisions apply to the surviving spouse and children of any Arkansas resident killed in action since 1960.
In addition to offering in-state tuition to recently discharged veterans and their dependents, the state of Arkansas offers in-state tuition to military members and their spouses.

Any veteran with a 50% or greater service-connected disability may be eligible for reduced annual fees for fishing and hunting licenses -you DO NOT have to be a California resident for this benefit.
State Parks and Recreation Pass
Any honorably discharged war veteran who is a resident of California with a 50% or more service-connected disability, former POW, or Medal of Honor recipient can get a free pass to all California state parks. This includes camping and day use. The pass is not valid at units operated by local government, private agencies, or concessionaires and it is not valid for special events, group campsites, and commercial use or for supplemental fees.

State Veterans’ Home
Colorado’s State Veteran Community Living Centers serve honorably discharged veterans, veterans’ spouses/widows and “Gold-Star” parents, whose children died while serving in the Armed Forces. Residents enjoy the camaraderie of sharing activities and daily life with other veterans, friends and family. Each location offers 24-hour nursing care, meals, physician services restorative therapy, transportation, diversified activities, an all-inclusive rate and much more. Colorado has 5 state veterans’ homes located in Aurora, Florence, Homelake, Rifle, and Walsenburg.
Colorado State Tax Advantage
There is a Property Tax Exemption for 50% of the first $200,000 of a home’s value for 100% service-connected disabled veterans.
Income Tax On Active Duty Pay
Effective January 1, 2016, active duty military pay is tax-free for Colorado residents who are stationed outside the state of Colorado.
Income Tax On Retired Military Pay
Military retirees ages 55 -64 can exclude up to $20,000 in any one taxable year from their retirement pay, those 65 and over can exclude up to $24,000.
Motor Vehicle Tax
No fee shall be charged to certain disabled Veterans or Ex-POWs who have established their right to benefits under public laws. Applies to subsequent vehicles, but only one at a time.
County allowance of up to $50 for burial and up to $50 for setting markers for pauper Veterans.
Hunting & Fishing License for Disabled Veterans
Free lifetime combination small-game hunting and fishing license for a resident veteran with a permanent service-connected disability of 60% or more or any resident patient at a VA hospital located within Colorado.
Columbine Annual Pass
Colorado resident permanently and totally disabled veterans may apply for a Columbine Annual Pass. The fee is $14.00 per year, is transferable between vehicles and the disabled veteran must be present in the vehicle.

Connecticut Veterans’ Home
The Department has a health care center in Rocky Hill with a capacity of 250 beds, a 50-bed substance abuse recovery program and a 500-bed Residential Program. The home is open to veteran residents of Connecticut with an other than dishonorable discharge. Professional services are provided by staff physicians, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, OT, PT, RT, dieticians and social workers are augmented by community specialists, as well as, networking to local VA and major area hospitals when appropriate. By Statute, veterans who are able to pay in whole or in part for programs or services determined by the applicable fee schedule will receive a monthly bill for such services rendered.
The Soldiers’, Sailors’ and Marines’ Fund
The Soldiers’, Sailors’ and Marines’ Fund (SSMF) is a state fund administered by the American Legion for the purpose of providing temporary financial assistance for veterans with ninety days of wartime service, who are disabled, unemployed or for sickness. An applicant must be a resident of the State of Connecticut at the time of application for benefits. SSMF provides funding for emergency needs such as clothing, food, medical and surgical aid, and general care and relief. For further information please call 860-296-0719.
State Income Tax Exemptions
Military retirement pay is exempt from Connecticut personal income tax.
Members of The Municipal Employees’ Retirement System, who leave municipal employment to enter the armed forces while the United States is at war, engaged in hostilities, or during national emergencies and are re-employed by the municipality within six months of discharge, are credited with the period of service as though they had been continuously employed. This six-month limitation can be extended due to service-related disability.
Connecticut offers a free lifetime pass to all state parks and forests for Connecticut residents with a service-connected disability.
Hunting and Fishing Licenses
Any active, full-time member of the military can purchase hunting, trapping and fishing licenses for the same fee as a Connecticut resident.
State Veterans’ Cemetery
Any veteran discharged with other than a dishonorable discharge is eligible for burial in the state veterans’ cemetery in Middletown. Spouses are also eligible for this benefit.
Property Tax Exemptions
Veterans, who have ninety days of wartime service, including Merchant Marines, who served during WWII, are eligible for a $1,500 exemption for property tax purposes (e.g., real property or automobiles). You have the option to choose to apply this exemption to your real estate or automobile tax. Certain veterans, who do not own real property or a motor vehicle, may be eligible for a tax refund if they are leasing a motor vehicle. Veterans below a certain income level and/or service-connected disabled veterans are eligible for additional property tax exemptions (up to $10,000 for paraplegics). Surviving spouses of veterans may also be eligible for this benefit. Contact your municipality’s Tax Assessor Officer for specific details. By Connecticut’s definition, this exemption is the reduction of the property’s assessed value for tax purposes.
State Employee Veteran Preference
For classified competitive state exams, a wartime veteran eligible for or receiving VA compensation receives an additional ten points. A wartime veteran not eligible for VA compensation or pension receives five additional points. A spouse of a qualified veteran is also eligible for additional points. However, to qualify, the veteran or spouse must achieve a passing grade on the examination score. If an honorably discharged veteran has served in a military action for which he/she received or is entitled to receive, a campaign badge or expeditionary medal, he/she qualifies for five additional points if they receive a passing grade on their examination. On a competitive municipal examination, a wartime veteran eligible for VA compensation or a pension, who has received a passing score, receives ten additional points. A wartime veteran not eligible for compensation or a pension, who has received a passing score, receives five additional points.
State Veterans Home
The Delaware Veterans Home, established in 2007, is a long-term care facility located on 24 acres in Milford, Delaware. The Home offers skilled nursing care on four units with a total of 150 beds.
Pension Benefits for Paraplegic Veterans
Each paraplegic veteran eligible for benefits hereunder shall receive a pension from the State of $3,000 per year payable in equal monthly installments at the end of each month in which such veteran is eligible. The veteran must file evidence with the Pension Office that: he/she is a paraplegic and fully disabled to the extent that he/she has no voluntary control over either of his/her legs, and he/she is listed on the rolls of the U.S. Veterans Administration as totally disabled for the cause, and the disability is a direct result of service in the armed forces of the United States while the United States was officially at war or during a period when the United States was engaged in hostilities with another nation as a member of the United Nations. Persons under age 60 receiving pensions from employers, the United States, the State or any subdivision thereof, may deduct up to $2,000 off of their federal adjusted gross income. Amounts received as pension by persons age 60 or older from employers, the United States, the State or any subdivision thereof may deduct up to $12,500 off of their federal adjusted gross income.
Veterans Trust Fund
The Delaware Veterans Trust Fund provides assistance to Delaware’s veterans in financial crisis. Established in 2013, it has brought relief to veterans in need of help with reintegration, housing, utilities, and incidental expenses for health and welfare.
State Employment Veterans Preference
Veterans preference shall be provided to earned ratings with ten points granted to disabled veterans and five points granted to all other eligible veterans. Any preference points for which a veteran would qualify may be claimed by his or her unmarried widow, widower, spouse of a member of the armed forces who is POW or MIA, or spouse of a veteran who is totally disabled.
Tax Credit for Employers Hiring Veterans
Employers are eligible during the year qualified veteran is hired and for two taxable years thereafter a tax credit of 10 percent of a qualified veteran’s wages, up to a maximum of $1,500. Employers may take the credit the year a veteran is hired and the two subsequent tax years. A qualified veteran is anyone who has served in a hostile environment such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
License and Permits for Military Spouses
Professional Regulations will issue a six-month temporary occupational license, when required, to a military spouse relocating in Delaware. The temporary license will allow for the spouse to obtain employment in their discipline, pending application for endorsement or reciprocity.
Educational Benefits For Children Of Deceased Veterans, Etc.
In order to qualify for this entitlement an applicant shall be: the child of a member of the armed forces who was killed while on active duty or who died from disease, wounds, injuries or disabilities arising or resulting from performance of duty; a member of the armed forces who is being held, or who was held prisoner of war; or a member of the armed forces officially declared missing in action; a person who at the time of application for benefits is at least 16 years of age, but not more than 24 years of age, and a resident of the State for at least three years prior to the date of application; attending or admitted for attendance at an educational institution beyond the high school level in a program not to exceed four years in duration. Benefits are administered by the Delaware Postsecondary Education Commission.
State Park Admission
Any veteran who honorably served or is honorably serving, including members of the Delaware National Guard, resides in the State of Delaware and owns a motor vehicle registered in Delaware gets a 50% discount on the annual fee for vehicle entrance to state parks and recreational areas.

Active duty members stationed in Delaware pay the resident rate for a license.
Delaware State Veterans Cemetery
Veterans, their spouse, and dependent children are eligible for interment at either of two State Veterans Cemeteries. The cemeteries are located in Bear, and Millsboro Delaware.

Florida State Veterans’ Homes Program
The Robert Jenkins, Jr. Assisted Living/Domiciliary Home is a 149-bed Assisted Living Facility in Lake City that provides a special combination of housing, personalized supportive services, and incidental medical care to eligible veterans. Domiciliary care is provided to veterans discharged under honorable conditions. Veterans admitted must be residents of Florida for one year prior to admission. The cost of care is determined based on income.
Basic Property Tax Exemptions
Eligible resident Veterans with VA certified service-connected disability of 10% or greater shall be entitled to a $5,000 property tax exemption. The Veteran must establish the exemption with the county tax official by providing documentation of their disability. The un-remarried surviving spouse, who on the disabled ex-service member’s death had been married to the ex-service member for at least 5 years is also entitled to this exemption.
Veterans’ Preference in Employment and Retention
The state and its political subdivisions shall give preference in employment and retention in government positions to veterans who served during a wartime period and separated under honorable conditions, or who are disabled veterans who have compensable service-connected disabilities as well as to a spouse or un-remarried veteran’s widow or widower under certain circumstances.
Florida waives undergraduate-level tuition at state universities and community colleges for Florida recipients of the Purple Heart and other combat-related decorations superior in precedence to the Purple Heart.

War Veterans Homes
Treatment is provided at no charge to all honorably discharged war Veterans in the Georgia War Veterans Home, Milledgeville, and in the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home in Augusta. The term “war Veteran” for this benefit means any Veteran who served on active duty in the armed forces of the United States, or on active duty in a reserve component, including the National Guard, during wartime or during the period January 31, 1955, through May 7, 1975, or August 2, 1990 to present. Exemption from Sales Tax on Vehicles
A disabled Veteran who receives a VA grant for the purchase and special adapting of a vehicle is exempt from paying the state sales tax on the vehicle (only on the original grant).
Exemption from State Income Tax
The period of time military personnel served on active duty as members of the armed forces of the United States in combat activities during a period designated by the President plus the next 180 days thereafter are disregarded in determining whether any filing requirement has been performed within the time limit prescribed for filing. For individuals who are hospitalized as a result of an injury or confined as a prisoner-of-war, the period of service in the combat zone, plus the period of confinement and the next 180 days thereafter shall be disregarded in determining whether any filing requirement has been performed within the time limit prescribed for filing.
Disabled veterans are exempt from payment of occupational taxes, administration fees, and regulatory fees imposed by local governments for peddling, conducting business, or practicing a profession or semi-profession. Veterans must (1) be discharged under honorable conditions from the armed forces of the United States; (2) have 10 percent physical disability for certain wartime veterans or a 25 percent service-connected physical disability for peace time-only veterans; and (3) have an income that is not liable for state income taxes.
Georgia HERO Scholarship
The Georgia HERO (Helping Educate Reservists and their Offspring) Scholarship Program was created to provide educational grant assistance to members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reservists who served in combat zones or the children of such members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reserves. The grant is to attend an approved school for a maximum of up to four award years in the sum of $2,000.00 per award year. No person shall be eligible to receive grant assistance provided under this subsection in excess of $8,000.00.
Hunting and Fishing Licenses for Returning Veterans
Returning veterans are entitled to a free honorary hunting and fishing license for a period of one year following issuance. Hawaii State Veterans Home
The Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo is a state nursing home for honorably discharged veterans over 55 who require skilled nursing care and meet the VA requirements for an “eligible veteran.” The veteran is responsible for any costs not covered by the VA or Medicare. Spouses may be eligible for admission depending on available space.
Special Housing for Disabled Veterans
Payment by the State of up to $5,000 to each qualified, totally disabled veteran for the purpose of purchasing or remodeling a home to improve handicapped accessibility.
Property Tax Exemptions
Applies to real property that is owned and occupied as a home by a totally disabled veteran or their widow(er). Also applies to passenger cars when they are owned by totally disabled veterans and subsidized by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The State of Hawaii Department of Human Resources Development manages the Veterans Preference Program for public employment. Non-disabled Veterans receive 5 Veterans preference points; disabled Veterans receive 10 points. Preference points are added to examination scores completed by applicants for open competitive positions only.
Active duty military personnel and their dependents stationed in Hawaii are considered to be residents for the purposes of obtaining a hunting license.

Specially Adapted Housing Tax Exemption
Allowed on the assessed value of the real property for which federal funds have been used for the purchase or construction of specially adapted housing for as long as the veteran, or the spouse, or unmarried surviving spouse resides on the property.
Returning Veterans’ Homestead Exemption
Qualifying Veterans receive a one-time $5,000 reduction to their home’s equalized assessed value (EAV). Qualifying Veterans who return from active duty in an armed conflict involving the U.S. armed forces can file an application upon their return home to receive this exemption.
Tax Exemption for Mobile Home
This exemption applies to the tax imposed by the Mobile Home Local Services Tax Act when that property is owned and used exclusively by a disabled veteran, spouse or unmarried surviving spouse as a home. The veteran must have received authorization of the Specially Adapted Housing Grant by the VA, whether the benefit was used or not. Applicant must be a permanent resident of the State of Illinois on January 1 of the tax year for which the exemption is being claimed. Disabled veterans that now live in a mobile home and never received the Specially Adapted Housing Grant are not eligible. Please contact your local service office for more information.
World War II Bonus Payment
A bonus of $10 per month for domestic service and $15 per month for foreign service is payable to a veteran who was a resident of Illinois at the time of entering service, served at least 60 days on active duty between September 16, 1940, and September 3, 1945, and received an honorable discharge. Survivors are entitled to a benefit of $1,000 if the veteran’s death was service-connected and within the period specified.
State Government/Employment Preference
Preference is given in Central Management Services entrance examinations to honorably discharged veterans who served in times of hostilities and peacetime. The Department of Central Management Services also conducts a Veterans Outreach Program that provides professional counseling to Veterans seeking state employment with the 45 boards, agencies, and commissions under the Governor’s jurisdiction. The Department of Employment Security/Illinois Job Service provides a trained “Veterans Representative” to help you get the training and job you need. An electronic statewide job search information system is available at different locations throughout the State of Illinois. Veterans should call 1-888-FOR-IETC to find their nearest Representative. The Department of Human Services provides services for veterans with mental/physical disabilities that assist them in returning to gainful employment. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs have a number of Small Business Administration loan and Job Training Programs.

Camping & Admission Fees
This benefit provides for the exemption of camping and admission fees for certain disabled persons and former prisoners of war who are Illinois residents and wish to camp in parks under the control of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Documentation is required.
Honorably discharged veterans of all ages and their families shall be admitted FREE, when they properly identify themselves, on Veterans’ Day at the fair. Veterans Day includes a day-long program of drum corps, drill teams, and color guard competition. Admission is FREE to people 60 and older on Senior Day.
Vietnam Veteran Survivors Compensation
Survivors are entitled to a payment of $1,000 if veteran’s death is service-connected or is the direct result of service-connected disabilities incurred in the period specified. A separate application is required.
The Veterans Home
The Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette provides nursing and domiciliary care for any honorably discharged Hoosier Veteran who has resided in Indiana for at least 12 months prior to admission. The Home is open to both veterans and their spouses.
Active duty military members may exempt up to $5,000 of their military income from their gross taxable income. Military retirees who are age 60 and over are entitled to deduct up to $5,000 of military or survivor benefits.
Military Family Relief Fund
The emergency grants may be used by the families of veterans who received honorable discharges for needs such as food, housing, utilities, medical services, transportation and other essential family support expenses which have become difficult to afford. Grants up to $2,500 may be awarded.
Temporary Assistance For Needy Families (TANF)
The TANF program offered through IDVA is available to assist military service members and their immediate families to proactively become self-sustaining and encourage strong family bonds.
Indiana offers Veterans’ preference in State Government employment for Veterans, their surviving Spouses and the Spouses of disabled Veterans. Employment preferences, where numerically based examinations are used as a device for selections, consists of adding ten points to the score of Veterans, disabled Veterans, Spouses of disabled or missing Veterans, and Widow(er)s of Veterans who lost their life during a period of war.
Disabled Veteran Plates
Disabled Veteran plates are the same as handicap plates in the State of Indiana. These are strictly limited to those individuals who have a serious mobility impairment due to a service-connected disability. Applications may be obtained from either the BMV or the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs. The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs must verify the veteran’s eligibility.
Each county auditor is authorized to pay up to an amount not to exceed $100 for the burial of a veteran or the veteran’s spouse, and to pay up to $100 for the setting of a federal headstone. Veterans must have received an honorable discharge, and an application must be filed with the county auditor in the county of residence.

Iowa Veterans Home
The State of Iowa runs a Veterans Home in Marshalltown. The home has a total of 113 residential and 642 nursing beds available. Cost is based on need, however, no one will be turned away. Spouses may be eligible for admission. Veterans must have an honorable discharge to be eligible for admission.
Home Ownership Assistance
This $5,000 grant is available to a service member who is buying a home in the state of Iowa. Members must have served on active duty on or after September 11, 2001 (or at least 90 days between August 2, 1990, and April 6, 1991) and purchased a home after March 10, 2005.
Disabled Veteran’s Homestead Tax Credit
This tax credit provides a 100% exemption of property taxes for 100% disabled service-connected veterans and Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) recipients.
Injured Veterans Grant Program
This grant provides up to $10,000 to service members or discharged veterans who sustained serious or very serious combat-related injuries in a combat theater of operations after September 11, 2001.
Veterans Trust Fund
The State of Iowa has established a multi-million dollar fund to provide certain services to veterans. Beginning in December 2007, interest from this fund has been available to provide relief for Iowa veterans and their families. At this time, interest funds are received monthly and approved applicants are placed on a waiting list based on the date received and approved. Currently, funds are used for unemployment or underemployment assistance due to service-related causes, assistance with vision, hearing, dental care, durable medical equipment, and prescription drugs; counseling and substance abuse services; housing repair; and transitional housing in an emergency. Trust fund expenditures are approved through the Iowa Veterans Commission.
War Orphans Educational Aid
Children of Iowa veterans killed in action following September 11, 2001, are eligible for up to $11,844.00 per year in tuition assistance at an Iowa post-secondary institution. Children qualify up to the age of twenty-six (26). Dependants of those killed in action prior to September 11, 2001, are eligible for $600 per year with a maximum of $3,000. Residency is required to receive this benefit.
National Guard Tuition Benefits
Present Iowa National Guard members in good standing are eligible for up to $2,700 per semester for full-time enrollment. Part-time students are eligible for $196 per semester hour. Additionally, Guard members who are mobilized will receive a tuition refund.
Veteran Lifetime Hunting/Fishing License
Veterans who are Iowa state residents and have at least a 0% service-connected disability rating from the VA for a disability related to their military service can get a lifetime hunting or fishing license for $7.00.
The State of Iowa Veterans Cemetery
The Iowa Veterans Cemetery began operation on July 3, 2008. Located 10 miles west of Des Moines, near Van Meter, the cemetery is available to all veterans, their spouses, and dependent children for burial. Honorably discharged veterans will be interred at no charge and spouses/dependents will be buried for a $300 fee.
Operation Recognition High School Diploma
This program furnishes an honorary high school diploma to qualifying veterans who did not complete high school due to armed service enlistment. The application form is used by the IDVA and the Department of Education to establish eligibility for honorably discharged veterans.

The State of Kansas runs two Veterans’ Homes: The Kansas Veterans’ Home in Winfield, which has 73 long-term care beds, a 43 bed domiciliary unit, and an 18 bed special care unit for Alzheimer’s and related dementia; there is also the Kansas Soldiers’ Home in Fort Dodge, which has three domiciliary residence halls and 60 cottages. Applicants must have received an “other than dishonorable” discharge and be either disabled, indigent, or willing to pay for care. Spouses may accompany veterans on a space-available basis.
Disabled veterans can claim a homestead refund. Veterans must be Kansas residents, honorably discharged, and certified to have at least 50% permanent disability sustained through military actions. Surviving spouses of deceased disabled veterans are also eligible to claim the Homestead exemption until they remarry.
State Income Tax
Military retirement pay is not taxed by the state.
Any veteran with a campaign medal AND who retired at a paygrade below O-3 has an other than dishonorable discharge and a VA disability or is the spouse of a 100% disabled veteran can get Veterans’ Preference for a state job. Veterans or spouses who qualify for Veterans’ Preference are guaranteed an interview and to receive consideration for the position for which they apply.

Kansas State Veterans Cemeteries
The state of Kansas has 4 state veterans’ cemeteries in Ft. Dodge, Ft. Riley, Wakeeney, and Winfield. Veterans who received an “other-than-dishonorable” discharge, guard and reservists with at least 20 years of qualifying service or those who die on active duty are eligible for burial. Dependents are also eligible for burial. There is no fee for veterans or their dependents, and there is no Kansas residency requirement.

Military income is not taxed. Military retirement pay is tax-exempt if retired before January 1, 1998, and partially exempt if retired after December 31, 1997.
Commonwealth Employment Preference Points
In accordance with Kentucky Revised Statute (KRS) 18A.150, Veterans’ Preference provides veterans, and in some instances their family members, opportunities to receive interviews in the selection process for merit employment within state government agencies. Veterans must have been granted an Honorable or General Discharge to receive this status. As with all job seekers, veterans must meet minimum requirements for a job before an interview can be offered.
Tuition Waiver Program
A waiver of tuition is an education benefit provided by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in recognition of military service of certain Kentucky veterans. The tuition waiver is provided for children, stepchildren, adopted children, spouses, and un-remarried widows & widowers. An approved tuition waiver means a student may attend any two-year, four-years schools or vocational technical schools that are operated and funded by the Kentucky Department of Education. Kentucky residency is a requirement for both the veteran and the applicant. A deceased veteran must have been a Kentucky resident at the time of death.

Kentucky veterans may qualify for special licenses based on their service or affiliation.

Louisiana War Veterans Homes
The Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs operates five War Veterans Homes. These homes, located in Reserve, Monroe, Bossier City, Jackson, and Jennings provide nursing care. For admission to a Louisiana State Veterans Home, a veteran must be a resident of the state of Louisiana. State residence is not mandatory if the applicant is referred from an in-state VA Medical Center or by a Louisiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs Veterans’ Assistance Counselor. The applicant must agree to abide by all rules and regulations governing the Home. Applicants who have income will be expected to pay for their care as is set forth in the care and maintenance schedule adopted for governing the Home residents. Spouses and Gold Star parents are eligible if they meet basic qualifying criteria. The applicant must undergo an examination to ascertain whether he/she meets the criteria for admission to the Home.
Property Tax Exemptions
The property tax for Veterans rated with 50% or greater disability is frozen at the current rate, this also applies to spouses of deceased disabled Veterans. There are income limits and other qualifications, check with your local assessor’s office to see if it is available in your parish. Veterans with 100% unemployability or totally disabled as well as their surviving spouses qualify for double the Homestead Exemption.
Retired military pay is not taxed.
Military Family Assistance Fund (MFA)
MFA was established in 2005 to help members of Louisiana National Guard and Louisiana Military Reserves and their Families address financial hardships they may encounter when they are placed on active-duty status. MFA can pay for a variety of items for those who qualify, such as food, housing, medical expenses, auto repair, and more. MFA is funded by private donations from individuals and corporations. All donations are tax deductible. MFA can pay up to $10,000 for one claim per active-duty order in a twelve (12) month period.
Transfer of Military Skills to Civilian Employment
Individuals with military training and experience will be granted professional licensure and/or certification when the service member has been awarded a military occupational specialty and performance in that specialty is at a level equal to or exceeding the requirements for said license and/or certification (provisions may apply). The same also allows for spouses of individuals with military training and experience will be granted a license, certification or registration to lawfully practice an occupation by the appropriate professional or occupational licensing board when the spouse meets certain conditions.
Louisiana state and city civil service departments award a five-point preference in original appointment to veterans who served honorably U.S. Armed Forces. They also award ten-point preference to each honorably discharged service-connected disabled veteran. Spouses of veterans who are rated VA unemployable as well as un-remarried widows of deceased Veterans and Gold Star parents are also eligible for this preference. Some restrictions apply for eligibility.
National Guard Tuition Benefits
Members are exempt from tuition at any state-funded college, university, or vocational/technical school for five years or a bachelor’s degree, whichever comes first. The Adjutant General of Louisiana is responsible for the overall policies, guidance, administration, and proper utilization of this program.

Maine Veterans’ Homes
Main has six veterans’ homes located in Augusta, Bangor, Caribou, Machias, Scarborough, and South Paris. Honorably discharged veterans who served at least one (1) day of active duty other than for training (both wartime & peacetime); spouses, widows, and widowers of qualified veterans; and gold star parents (a parent whose son or daughter died from wounds received in combat) can come to a Maine Veterans’ Home.

Veterans Small Business Loan Program
The Finance Authority of Maine may provide special loan insurance to veterans and wartime veterans for veteran-owned small businesses. The Authority does not make small business loans.

A Veteran who served during a recognized war period and is 62 years or older; or, is receiving 100% disability as a Veteran; or, became 100% disabled while serving is eligible for a $6,000 property tax exemption. Un-remarried surviving spouses are also eligible.

Hunting & Fishing Licenses for Disabled Veterans
A disabled veteran who has a service-connected disability evaluated at 50% or more may obtain a complimentary license to fish, trap, hunt, including archery, muzzle load, bear, migratory bird, pheasant, spring/fall wild turkey, coyote night hunt, crossbow, one expanded archery antlerless deer permit, and upon meeting the qualifications, a license to guide. This license is available to disabled veterans who are residents of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. This license(s) remains valid for the life of the license holder, as long as the license holder continues to satisfy the residency requirements.
State Park Fees
Any disabled veteran displaying on the veteran’s motor vehicle special designating plates or placards issued in accordance with Maine law is not required to pay a fee for admission to any state-owned park, camping area or beach.
Active Duty Military Hunting & Fishing Licenses
Maine military personnel who are on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and permanently stationed outside Maine may purchase either a hunting, fishing, or combination hunting and fishing license for a discount.
Hunting & Fishing Licenses for Non-Resident Active Duty Members
Anyone serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and permanently stationed at a military base in Maine may purchase a resident license to hunt, fish, or trap.
Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery
The Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery System consists of four cemeteries. One of which is located in Caribou, two in Augusta and one in Springvale. The State will, without charge, open and close the grave and furnish perpetual care. Military rank or civilian stature will not be given consideration in selection or size of individual graves. Consequently, all graves will be equal in size and type. Selection of the lot will be made by the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery System office in the order that burial requests occur. Eligible dependents will be buried adjacent to the plot of the buried veteran.
Charlotte Hall Veterans Home
Maryland’s veteran’s home is located on 125 acres on the site of the former Charlotte Hall Military Academy in Charlotte Hall, Maryland. Opened in 1985, the 504-bed facility provides a continuum of care from the 168-bed assisted living program to the 286-bed skilled nursing program. Specialized care, for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other related dementia, is provided in a 42-bed secured unit.
Property Tax Exemptions
A property tax exemption is available to veterans who are permanently and totally disabled from service-connected causes, for their primary residence located in the State of Maryland. The exemption passes to the veteran’s spouse upon his or her death. The surviving spouse of active duty military personnel who died in the line of duty as well as the surviving spouse of a totally disabled veteran, or a spouse who receives the dependency and indemnity compensation (effective June 30, 2006) may also receive an exemption.
Active Duty Pay Income Tax Exemption
Up to $15,000 of military pay may be excluded if earned while serving outside the United States or its possessions.
Military Retired Pay Income Tax Exemption
Military retirees are exempt from Maryland income tax on the first $5,000, with an increase to the first $10,000 (once they become over the age of 65), of their retirement income.
Vessel Excise Tax
Active duty military personnel are exempt from the 5% vessel excise tax levied on the sale, resale or transfer of a vessel. The exemption is for not more than one year to current owners of vessels who are members of the armed services and who are serving on active duty.
Motor Vehicle Excise Tax
As a new resident of Maryland, you must title your vehicle within 60 days of moving to Maryland. Proof of military status must be submitted to be eligible for an excise tax credit. Active duty military personnel who are residents of Maryland seeking to register an out-of-state vehicle may not be required to pay the full Maryland excise tax if they apply for a transfer of title and tags to Maryland within one year of becoming a Maryland resident or within a year of returning from deployment.

Free Hunting Licenses for Disabled Veteran
A free lifetime hunting license is available to Maryland residents certified as a former Prisoners of War, or 100% service-connected disabled veterans. The lifetime license includes the bow stamp, muzzleloader stamp, and furbearer permit. The Maryland Migratory Game Bird Stamp is not part of the Complimentary License.

Free Fishing Licenses for Disabled Veterans
A free lifetime license is available to Maryland residents who are 100% service connected disabled American Veterans or former Prisoners of War (POW). The license incorporates both the non-tidal angler’s license and the Chesapeake Bay sport fishing license. It does not, however, include the trout stamp.
Admission to State Parks
All entrance charges to MD state parks are waived for all veterans, both resident and nonresident. The waiver is applicable to the veteran only and not others in the same vehicle unless a per-vehicle charge is in effect at the time. In that case, the per-vehicle fee is waived. No other facility use service charges will be waived.

Motor Vehicle Tax
Disabled veterans who by reason of service in the U.S. armed forces have suffered the loss of, or permanent loss of the use of, one or both feet or one or both hands or the loss of sight in one eye or who have permanent impairment of vision of both eyes (see statute for details) and are certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs are eligible for motor vehicle excise exemption (applicable only to one motor vehicle owned and registered for personal, non-commercial use).
Sales Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans
Disabled veterans who by reason of service in the U.S. armed forces have suffered the loss of, or permanent loss of the use of, both legs or both arms or one leg and one arm are eligible for a motor vehicle sales tax exemption (applicable only to one motor vehicle owned and registered for personal, non-commercial use).
An annuity in the amount of $2,000, which is payable biannually on August 1st and February 1st in two installments of $1,000 each is available for certain veterans and their spouses, as well as Gold Star Parents. This benefit is provided by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, through the Department of Veterans’ Services.
Civil Service and Veterans’ Preference
Massachusetts veterans are entitled to veterans’ preference in civil service exams. If you attain a score of 70% or higher, you are entitled to go to the top of the exam list, with disabled veterans having top priority. If you apply for a promotional exam, you get two points added to your score. If you apply for a civil service job for which there is no exam, you are entitled to veterans’ preference in a “provisional appointment.” If you apply for a position in the labor force, you are not required to take an exam and you go to the top of the list
Tuition and Fee Waivers for Guard Members
The Massachusetts National Guard Education Assistance Program provides a 100% tuition and fee waiver for Massachusetts National Guard soldiers attending a state college, university, or community college program. Generally, these state-supported programs are offered during the day as part of a degree program. Your assistance can continue as long as you are in good standing academically and until you have reached 130 semester hours.

Michigan State Veterans Homes
There are 2 Michigan State Veterans Homes, the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, and the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. A veteran of the armed forces of the United States eligible for VA health care or financial assistance for long-term care may be admitted. The veteran must have been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. Veterans who enlisted after Sept. 7, 1980, or who entered active duty after Oct. 16, 1981, must have served 24 continuous months or the full period for which they were called to active duty in order to be eligible. Michigan residency is not required, and spouses or surviving spouses may be admitted if space is available. Fees are income based.

Michigan Veterans Trust Fund
The Michigan Veterans Trust Fund is a financial grant to assist wartime veterans when an unforeseen situation has caused a temporary financial emergency or hardship.
Veterans’ preference will be given to eligible veterans or their spouses for initial employment with the state of Michigan.
Michigan offers veterans a large array of employment services including disabled veterans outreach programs and the Shifting Heroes Program, a component of the Michigan Shifting Gears Program which is a career-transition program for seasoned mid-and late-career professional talent going through, or preparing to go through, a career transition scenario.
Michigan provides an annual undergraduate tuition grant of up to $2,800 for the eligible children of certain deceased military personnel or totally and permanently disabled veterans.
Hunting and Fishing Privileges
Michigan residents who are currently in federal active duty status may obtain hunting and fishing licenses, for which a lottery is not required, free of charge. Non-residents who are in federal active duty status and currently stationed in Michigan are eligible to receive resident pricing on hunting and fishing licenses.

Minnesota Veterans’ Homes
Minnesota Veterans’ Homes are located in Fergus Falls, Hastings, Luverne, Minneapolis and Silver Bay. There is also an Adult Day Center located in the Minneapolis Veterans’ Home. The Adult Day Center provides a broad array of therapeutic health care services – delivered by trained, highly dedicated professionals. It is a Veteran-based community that allows participants to connect with other Veterans in a safe, comfortable environment. The Adult Day Center allows participants to achieve the highest attainable level of physical, mental and social well-being – with the independence of living at home. It also provides much-needed respite – and a full array of support services – for Veterans’ caregivers. Admission to Minnesota Veterans Homes is available to honorably discharged veterans who entered service from Minnesota or are current residents, who served 181 consecutive days on active duty unless discharged earlier because of disability incurred in the line of duty. The spouse of an eligible Veteran who is at least 55 years old and meets residency requirements. The applicant must also be able to demonstrate a medical or clinical need for admission. Residents contribute to the cost of their care according to their means.
State Income Taxes

Short Term Financial Assistance (Subsistence)
The Subsistence program provides temporary assistance with shelter payments (rent/mortgage), current utility bills and health insurance premiums to eligible Veterans and their Dependents. This benefit is income and asset-based, and is designed to assist Veterans for up to six months for those who are unable to work his/her normal occupation due to a temporary disability, or who are permanently disabled and are waiting to receive a permanent disability benefit from VA Compensation, VA Pension, Social Security or other long term benefit.
MN Veterans Preference Act
MN Veterans Preference Act (VPA) grants veterans a limited preference over non-veterans in hiring and promotion for MN public employment and also provides protection against unfair dismissals and demotions. VPA grants veterans the right to a hearing, prior to dismissal.
Minnesota GI Bill
The Minnesota GI Bill is available to Minnesota Veterans who served honorably in any branch of the armed forces at any time; non-veterans who served honorably for a cumulative total of five years or more as a member of the MN National Guard or any other active or reserve component and had active service after September 11, 2001; or eligible spouses, surviving spouses, and children of permanently and totally disabled veterans who are eligible for the Federal GI Bill. Full-time undergraduate or graduate students may be eligible to receive up to $1,000 per semester and part-time students can receive up to $500 per semester (up to $3,000 per academic year and $10,000 per lifetime). OJT and Apprenticeship individuals are eligible for up to $2,000 per fiscal year for either program. Approved employers are eligible to receive $1,000 placement credit payable upon hiring a person under this program and another $1,000 after 12 consecutive months of employment. Recipients must be a Minnesota resident under the age of 62 and enrolled at a Minnesota institution.

Minnesota State Park Vehicle Permits
Any active military service personnel stationed outside of Minnesota within the past 90 days can get a free one-day Minnesota state park vehicle permit. Bring your current military orders and military ID, and let the park attendant know your military status when you arrive. Military personnel or their Dependents who have a Federal government access pass to Federal recreational sites can get a free one-day Minnesota state park vehicle permit. Bring your Federal access pass and military ID, and let the park attendant know your military status when you arrive. Any resident Veteran with any level of service-connected disability can get a free one-day Minnesota state park vehicle permit. Bring a copy of your determination letter and a photo ID, and let the park attendant know your military status when you arrive. Any Veteran who has a permanent and total service-connected disability can get a free annual Minnesota state park permit. Present a copy of your determination letter or VA ID card to the park attendant for the free annual sticker, which must be placed on a vehicle that is owned by the Veteran. If the Veteran with the permanent service-connected disability does not own the vehicle transporting the Veteran, you can still get a free one-day Minnesota state park permit.
Cross Country Ski Pass Exemptions
Minnesota residents who have served at any time during the preceding 24 months in federal active service outside the United States and has been discharged from active service is exempt from the pass requirement if the resident possesses official military discharge papers (DD214). Minnesota residents in the US Military who are stationed outside the state and home on leave are also eligible for a pass exemption, (must have leave form).
Resident 100% Disabled Veterans Hunting License
With proof of a 100% service-related disability may obtain a free Small Game License (241) and a free Firearms (242), or Muzzleloader (240), or Archery (243) Deer License from an ELS license agent. In addition, a disabled Veteran is exempt from purchasing state pheasant or waterfowl stamps but must purchase a turkey stamp and license to hunt turkeys and a federal duck stamp to hunt waterfowl. Disabled Veterans with 100% service-connected disability will receive first preference in drawings for special deer hunts, bear and turkey permits.
Resident Veteran 100% Permanent Card
Resident Veterans who have 100% permanent service-connected disability as defined by the United State Department of Veterans Affairs may apply for a permanent card that may be presented to an agent annually to receive a free Small Game and/ or a Deer License. This card will assist with the process of receiving these types of license’s, however, all eligibility requirements must be met prior to receiving the license(s).
Resident Purple Heart Recipients
Purple Heart recipients must purchase licenses, but will receive first preference in drawings for antlerless deer permits, bear and turkey permits.
Firearms Safety Training
Military personnel who are on active duty and has successfully completed basic training in the US armed forces, reserve component, or National Guard may obtain a hunting license or approval authorizing hunting regardless of whether the person is issued a firearms safety certificate. Note: They must be on active duty, home on leave with leave papers (they then qualify only for that time frame). Once discharged or no longer on active duty, they must complete the firearms safety training course or online adult course the same as all others born after Dec 31, 1979.
The Guardianship Division provides financial case management services to incompetent veterans, their dependents, and survivors, who may be vulnerable to exploitation by others or by their own inabilities to manage their funds.

Missouri Veterans Homes
A current total of seven skilled nursing homes are located throughout Missouri, providing 3 levels of skilled nursing care at minimal cost to the veteran. Under the management of Missouri Veterans Commission, these homes are located in Cameron, Warrensburg, Mexico, St. Louis, St. James, Cape Girardeau, and Mt. Vernon. Each Missouri Veterans Home employs a licensed nursing home administrator, has registered nurses on duty 24 hours per day, and provides physician care; physical, speech, occupational and recreational therapy; medications; cosmetology; maintenance, environmental and social services, and dietary specialists. Each home has a secured dementia unit that includes a dining room, activity area and an enclosed courtyard. The monthly resident charge is calculated using a sliding scale based on the veteran’s ability to pay. To be eligible for admission to a Missouri Veterans Home, a veteran during his or her lifetime must have lived in Missouri for 180 days, meet the criteria for veteran status established by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, and require skilled nursing services.
Military income is not taxed if stationed outside Missouri and you and your spouse spent less than 30 days in Missouri.
Income Tax on Retired Pay
All military retirement pension income is exempt from state taxes.
Tax Exemption for Agent Orange Settlement Payments
Agent Orange Settlement Payments made for the Agent Orange Fund to a veteran or his dependents are exempt from state tax.
Vietnam Veterans Survivor Grant Program
Legislation passed in 1991 provides that certain surviving widows and children of Vietnam Veterans may qualify to receive tuition-free scholarships to attend institutions of post-secondary education in Missouri. The veteran’s death must be attributable to illness that could possibly be a result of exposure to toxic chemicals such as “Agent Orange” during the Vietnam conflict in order for the survivor to qualify. The maximum annual grant amount is the least of: the actual tuition charged at the school in which you are enrolled full time, or the average amount of tuition charged to a Missouri undergraduate resident enrolled full time in the same class level and in the same academic major at the Missouri public four-year, regional institutions.
Veterans’ Preference with State of Missouri Employment
Missouri Veterans receive five-point preference when testing for any position with the state, with a ten point preference for a service-connected disabled veteran. Spouses of eligible veterans can also qualify for Veterans Preference for State testing.
Priority for Qualified Veterans Employment
State agencies which administer federally funded employment and training programs for veterans shall give priority to qualified veterans and other eligible persons.
Missouri Returning Heroes’ Education Act
This act limits the tuition to no more than $50 per credit hour at public colleges and universities while enrolled in an undergraduate certificate or degree program after all other financial aid is taken into account. It is applicable to combat Veterans who served after September 11, 2001. Veteran remains eligible for ten years after honorable discharge.
Free Fishing & Hunting License
Any honorably discharged resident veteran having a service-related disability of 60% or more, or who was a prisoner of war during military service, may take fish, live bait, clams, mussels, turtles and frogs without permit (except trout permit or daily tag in areas where prescribed), and may take wildlife as provided in Chapter 7 without permit (except deer and turkey hunting permits and the Migratory Bird Hunting Permit as prescribed); provided, while hunting or fishing s/he carries a certified statement of eligibility from the Veterans Administration.
Resident Hunting & Fishing Licenses for Active Duty
All members of the United States armed forces stationed and residing in Missouri on permanent change of station status, and their immediate families residing with them, may receive resident permit privileges.
State Veterans Cemeteries
Missouri Veterans Commission currently operates five State Veterans Cemeteries, one each in Springfield, Higginsville, Bloomfield, Ft. Leonard Wood, and Jacksonville. There is no charge for any of the services provided. These services include opening and closing of the grave, provision of a concrete grave liner, upright granite headstones, full military honors for the Veteran, and perpetual care. Those who choose cremation have the choice of in-ground burial or placement within a columbarium niche. Pre-registration for future planning purposes is also available for Veterans and their eligible family members. Veterans, spouses, and dependent children may be eligible for burial and cemetery benefits by the State of Missouri and the Federal Government.

Military Waiver for CDL
Service members currently licensed and who are or were employed in the past year in a military position requiring the operation of a military motor vehicle equivalent to a commercial motor vehicle may apply for a skills test waiver for their commercial driver license (CDL). Written tests cannot be waived.

Vehicle Registration Fee and Veterans’ Cemetery Fee Waivers
Eligible persons are exempt from the veterans’ cemetery fee for two sets of special veteran license plates and all motor vehicle registration fees for two motor vehicles that are not used for commercial purposes.

Certain Disabled or Deceased Veterans’ Residences Exempt
A residence, including the lot on which it is built, that is owned and occupied by a veteran or a veteran’s spouse is exempt from property taxation under certain situations
Nebraska Veterans’ Aid Fund
The NVA Fund was established in 1921. This temporary emergency aid fund assists veterans, their spouses, and dependents when an unforeseen emergency occurs disrupting their normal method of living and when other resources are not immediately available. All income from the Fund is used for aid and not for administrative expenses of the fund. Aid can only be used for food, fuel, shelter, wearing apparel, funeral, medical, and surgical items. The application must be made through the County Service Officer or post-Service Officer of any recognized veterans’ organization in the county nearest the applicant’s place of residence and submitted to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
Nebraska Homestead Exemption
A homestead exemption provides relief from property taxes by exempting all or a portion of the valuation of the homestead from taxation. The maximum exemption is the taxable value of the homestead up to $40,000 or 100 percent of the county’s average assessed value of a single-family residential property, whichever is greater. The homestead maximum value is $95,000 or 200 percent of the county’s average assessed value of a single-family residential property, whichever is greater. The exempt value will be reduced by ten percent for each $2,500 the assessed value exceeds the maximum value. If the assessed valuation exceeds the maximum value by $20,000 or more the homestead is not eligible for exemption. A Veteran must have received an honorable discharge or general discharge under honorable conditions.
State Veterans Preference
Veterans who obtain passing scores on all parts or phases of an examination or numerical scoring shall have five percent added to their passing score if a claim for preference is made on the application. An additional five percent score shall be added for a disabled Veteran. When no examination or numerical scoring is used, the preference shall be given to the qualified Veteran if two or more equally qualified candidates are considered for the position. Disabled Veterans will take priority over a non-disabled Veteran in the same situation.
Waiver of Tuition
The University of Nebraska, the state colleges, and community colleges on behalf of any eligible child, spouse, widow or widower that meets the following requirements may waive tuition. He or she is a resident of this state and meets the appropriate institution’s requirements for paying in-state tuition. He or she has a parent, stepparent or spouse who was a member of the armed forces of the United States and who: (1) Died of a service-connected disability; (2) Died subsequent to discharge as a result of injury or illness sustained while in service; (3) Is permanently and totally disabled as a result of military service; (4) Is classified as missing in action or as a prisoner of war during armed hostilities after August 4, 1964. The waiver shall be valid for one degree, diploma, or certificate from a community college and one baccalaureate degree. Applications are submitted to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs by contacting the County Veterans Service Officer nearest the applicant’s place of residence.
Reservist Tuition Credit
Nebraska residents who are enlisted members of a Nebraska-based unit of the Active Selected Reserve may be eligible for a 50% tuition credit to the University of Nebraska campuses, Nebraska state colleges and Nebraska community colleges. This program is allowed 200 new applicants each calendar year.
Free Hunting & Fishing Licenses for Disabled Veterans
Nebraska residents who are veterans may receive a fee-exempt hunting or fishing permit if they are 50 percent disabled as a result of injuries incurred in the line of duty while in the Military or receives a pension from the Veterans Administration as a result of a total permanent disability not incurred in the line of duty in the Military Service. Nebraska residents who are veterans may qualify for a Veteran’s Hunting/Fishing Permit for a fee of $5 if they are 64 years of age or older and a veteran that has served active duty service other than basic training.

Soldiers on active duty stationed in Nebraska for 30 days or more may purchase hunting and fishing permits at the resident rate, regardless of state residency claimed.
Deployed Military Permit

Certain wartime veterans, their wives or widows may be eligible for a property tax credit of $50 ($100 if both are eligible veterans). Cities/towns may vote to adopt a higher tax credit of up to $500. The widow of a veteran who was killed while on active duty in the military may be eligible for a tax credit of between $700 and $2000 on real estate or personal property. There is a $700 tax credit on real estate occupied as the principal place of abode by a permanently and totally disabled service-connected veteran, double amputee or paraplegic or un-remarried surviving spouse. Cities and towns may vote to adopt a higher tax credit of up to $2000. A permanently and totally disabled veteran who is blind, paraplegic or a double amputee as a result of service connection and who owns a specially adapted homestead acquired with the assistance of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, or with proceeds from the sale of any previous homestead acquired with the assistance of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, shall be exempt from all taxation on the homestead. The veteran’s surviving spouse shall also be exempt from all taxation on the homestead.
War veterans and their dependent families who are unable to support themselves shall be supported at public expense in the town or city in which they live.
Preference shall be given in appointing employees of the State Liquor Commission, in selecting members of the State Veterans Council, in appointing the Director of the State Veterans Council, in appointing the Commandant and employees of the New Hampshire Veterans Home, and veterans or their un-remarried widows and spouses of disabled veterans in public departments and/or public works of state and local units.
Service-connected disabled veterans and their un-remarried widows may be exempt from fees for a Peddler’s License.
Free Tuition at Vocational-Technical College
The child of a missing person who was domiciled in this State serving in or with the U.S. armed forces after February 28, 1961, is entitled to free tuition at vocational-technical college so long as said missing person is so reported/listed as missing, captured, etc.
Fish and Game Licenses
Honorably discharged veterans who are residents of New Hampshire and who are permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected disability may be issued a free perpetual Fish and Game License. Patients at the VA Medical Center in Manchester, NH, and residents of the NH Veterans’ Home may be issued free fishing permits under certain conditions. Disabled veterans may hunt from motor vehicles or boats under certain conditions with a proper permit.
Indigent veterans may be buried at the expense of the municipality in which the veteran died.
New Jersey, Statewide,
Disabled veterans and Purple Heart recipients (under certain specific circumstances) are exempt from payment of municipal parking meter fees, for up to 24 hours, so long as their vehicle displays a valid “Disabled Veteran, Purple Heart Recipient Placard” issued by the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission. NJ Veterans Memorial Homes
The State of New Jersey runs Veterans’ Homes in Paramus, Menlo Park, and Vineland. The facilities are open to Veterans of all wars who served on active duty and were honorably discharged, qualified National Guard/Reserve Retirees, the Veteran’s Spouse, and Spouses and parents of members of the military who were killed in action during a period of war (Gold Star Parent). A Spouse/Widow/Widower must be at least 50 years of age and must have been married to the Veteran for a period of not less than 10 years. Preference is given to applicants who were state residents for at least two years immediately prior to application for admission. Applicants must meet certain asset limitation criteria. Residents pay according to ability based on income.
The Transitional Housing Program for homeless veterans occupies one large building on state property in Winslow Township. The program is divided into three phases: treatment; self-reclamation; and community reintegration. Each phase lasts three to six months and is tailored to individual treatment needs and vocational interests. Eligible veterans are referred from a VA Medical Center after receiving a medical evaluation. To be admitted into the program, the veteran must agree to a long-term program focusing on psychological, social and vocational rehabilitation. The program is drug and alcohol-free and has a staff comprised of professionals in the fields of mental health, addictions, social work, vocational rehabilitation and nursing.
NJ Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (HMFA)
The New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (HMFA) offer low-interest rate HMFA mortgages that provide veterans and their families with increased buying power and a savings of thousands of dollars in interest over the life of the loan. HMFA offers residential mortgages to United States veterans through the Veterans Administration (VA) home buyer program. Most HMFA home ownership loans are originated by private lenders that are approved to participate in the programs.
Active Duty Income Tax Exclusion
If your permanent home was New Jersey before entering the military, active-duty income is not subject to state taxes, IF you meet all three of the following conditions: 1) did not maintain any permanent home in New Jersey during tax year; 2) maintained a permanent home outside New Jersey during the entire year; 3) spent less than 30 days in New Jersey state during the tax year. (Barracks, bachelor officers´ quarters, quarters assigned on vessel do not constitute permanent abode.) However, if you pay for and maintain, either by out-of-pocket payments or forfeiture of quarters allowance, an apartment or home (either owned or rented) outside New Jersey, such facilities constitute a permanent home outside New Jersey.
Retired Military Pay Income Tax
U.S. military pension and survivor’s benefit payments are not taxable for New Jersey gross income tax purposes, regardless of the recipient’s age or disability status.
New Jersey Property Tax Deduction
An annual $250 Veterans Property Tax Deduction requires citizenship, state residency, active wartime service in the U.S. Armed Forces, honorable discharge, property ownership, and the timely completion of an application. If living, the Veteran must own the property in whole or in part to qualify for the deduction. Surviving spouse qualifies if all criteria are met. Eligibility for the deduction is established as of October 1 of the pre-tax year. The application can be filed at the local tax assessors office with appropriate documentation. Disabled Veteran Exemption requires a 100 % VA Certificate of Disability. The exemption should be permanent and total, partial or temporary is non-qualifying. The property must be owned and occupied by the claimant and must be their legal residence in this state.
New Jersey Catastrophic Entitlement
Eligible Veterans/surviving spouses receive a monthly entitlement of $62.50. Criteria: A Veteran must be a New Jersey resident in receipt of a permanent service-connected disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs that resulted from wartime service resulting in one of the following catastrophic disabilities resulting in a 100% rating: loss of sight; amputation of both hands, both feet or one hand and one foot; hemiplegia and permanent paralysis of one leg and one arm on either side of the body; paraplegia and permanent paralysis of both legs and lower parts of the body; osteochondritis and permanent loss of use of both legs; multiple sclerosis and the loss of use of both feet or both legs; quadriplegia.
POW and MIA Tuition Benefits
Free undergraduate college tuition is available to any child born or adopted before, during or after the period of time his or her parent was officially declared a prisoner of war (POW) or person missing in action (MIA) after Jan. 1, 1960. The POW-MIA must have been a New Jersey resident at the time he or she entered the service or whose official residence is in New Jersey. The child must attend either a public or private institution in New Jersey. A copy of DD-1300 must be furnished with the application.
War Orphans Tuition Assistance
Children of those service personnel who died while in the military or due to service-connected disabilities, or who are officially listed as missing in action by the U.S. Dept. of Defense may claim $500 per year for four years of college or equivalent training. To qualify, the child must be a resident of New Jersey for at least one year immediately preceding the filing of the application and be between the ages of 16 and 21 at the time of application. The veteran must have been a state resident.

Hunting Fee Discount for Non-Resident Disabled Veterans Undergoing Rehabilitation
Hunting licenses for deer, antelope, elk, javelina and turkey may be sold to non-resident disabled U.S. military members or veterans at resident license-fee rates if the applicant is undergoing a rehabilitation program utilizing hunting activities supported by the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) or an authorized nonprofit organization.
Temporary Hunting and Fishing License for Active-Duty Military Personnel
Any active duty military personnel, National Guard or Reserve member who is a legally domiciled resident of New Mexico can apply for a temporary active duty fishing or small game hunting license. Applicants must show proof of residency and not claim residency elsewhere. Applicants may also apply if they are on active duty outside the state but are currently on leave in New Mexico for not more than 30 days.
Veterans’ Tax Exemption
Any veteran who served a minimum of 90 days consecutive active duty (other than for training), was honorably discharged and is a legal resident of New Mexico qualifies for a $4,000 reduction in the taxable value of their real property for county taxation purposes. This benefit is also available to non-remarried surviving spouses of a veteran who would have otherwise qualified for this benefit.
Disabled Veteran Tax Exemption
Any veteran who has been approved for 100 percent service-connected disability compensation benefits by the VA is eligible for a complete property tax waiver on their primary residence.
Exemption from Excise Taxes on Vehicle Purchases
