AT&T - Telephone & High Speed Internet Provider
AT&T, in its current incarnation, is the largest DSL high speed Internet, local and long distance phone service provider in the country. Formed in 1983 as Southwestern Bell, the new telephone provider was one of the seven Regional Bell Operating Companies created after the breakup of the original AT&T known as "Ma Bell".
Ten years later, Southwestern Bell officially changed its name to SBC Communications which began a round of corporate acquisitions in the telephone world. SBC acquired Pacific Telesis and Southern New England Telephone, both regional carriers on opposite sides of the country. SBC then moved into middle America with the acquisition of Ameritech, another of the Regional Bell Operating Companies.
In late 2005, SBC bought the existing AT&T Corporation and began marketing all of its telephone and DSL Internet companies under the AT&T brand. The nationwide rollup was completed with the late 2006 acquisition of BellSouth. The resulting company, several "Baby Bells" united under the AT&T brand, provides world class telephone and DSL high speed Internet service to over 150 million customers across the country.
