How we review internet in Dallas
Our methodology
We evaluate broadband providers in four categories: affordability, performance, value and customer satisfaction. Each category contains multiple sub-factors, all of which are weighted differently to impact the provider’s overall score.
For each sub-factor, we score all providers on a continuous scale of one to five, relative to the industry as a whole. Because the average download speed in America is currently 290 Mbps, for example, we assigned all plans with download speeds between 100 and 299 Mbps a score between three and four. Xfinity’s 200 Mbps plan received a 3.50 score for download speed, while Spectrum’s 500 Mbps plan got a 3.71.
We only considered standardized data points in our scoring system. More abstract data like consistency of service and brand reputation is still part of our analysis, but we opted to let our writers address them in the context of each review.
Dallas internet takeaways
Dallas residents have access to fiber, cable, 5G and satellite internet options. Cable and satellite have almost 100% serviceability across the city.
Fiber, on the other hand, has less availability, with the majority of the city 40% – 60% serviceable and pockets of heavier serviceability of 80% – 100% in certain areas such as Lakewood, University Park, Meaders and Oak Cliff.
Spectrum is the main non-satellite provider in Dallas, with 91% coverage, followed by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Great service and reasonable price.
5/5
As with most satellites, the internet is down in bad weather. However, it is very slow and unreliable on good weather days as well. Customer service online had me waiting on the queue for about 15 minutes. When they got to me they gave me one minute to respond and closed the request. My issue was never resolved.

What speed do you need?
The internet speed you need in Dallas depends on several factors, including the number of devices you consistently have connected to your network and the types of internet activities you engage in. While individual online tasks require minimal speed (under 10 Mbps for most streaming platforms; less than 3 Mbps for email/web browsing), real-world usage typically involves multiple computers, Wi-Fi-connected phones and smart home devices competing for bandwidth.
General speed guidelines for Dallas internet:
- Small households with few internet users or light internet use (email, web browsing, casual streaming or gaming) can manage with speeds from 100 – 300 Mbps
- Midsize households with over 10 connected devices (cellphones, tablets, laptops) and regular online gamers or binge-streamers need between 300 and 500 Mbps
- Heavy internet users who partake in bandwidth-heavy activities (competitive gaming, ongoing streaming, working from home/downloading large files) should consider gig or multi-gig speeds, as well as low-latency plans to reduce ping rate
Other speed considerations: Download speed gets most of the attention, but upload speed is increasingly important for tasks that are becoming part of daily life, like video calls or backing up photos/videos to the cloud. Fiber connections have the fastest upload speeds, but many cable plans offer decent upload speeds as well.
If you plan to connect more devices in the near future, like getting a new PlayStation for a holiday, remember to factor in those additional speed needs when shopping for Dallas internet plans.
The future of internet in Dallas
Dallas County is expanding high-speed internet access through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding. This initiative aims to close the digital divide in Dallas by building fiber internet networks in 10 ZIP codes. Fiber provider Zayo was awarded $27.8 million in ARPA funding from Dallas County to build over 60 miles of fiber infrastructure, with construction to be completed in late 2026.
