Key takeaways
Fastest internet in Michigan
The fastest internet in Michigan is the gig/multi-gig plans, which can range up to 7,000 Mbps depending on the provider. AT&T and Frontier have fast fiber plans up to 5 Gbps** and 7 Gbps, respectively. However, AT&T is more widely available to over 55% of Michigan, while Frontier only has 4% availability. Xfinity is another high-speed option widely available to almost 60% of Michigan, but its cable tech results in slower upload speeds than fiber providers like AT&T.
If you live in a rural part of the state with no fiber or cable access, Starlink will provide the best high-speed satellite internet since its technology provides faster speeds and lower latency than traditional satellite providers like Hughesnet.
The median internet speed in Michigan is about 270 Mbps, which is on par with the median U.S. speed of about 285 Mbps. While providers like AT&T offer speeds much higher than this, advertised speeds may differ from the speeds you actually get. Keep in mind that providers also vary by location, so check your ZIP code to find providers available at your address.

Provider | Starting price* | Download speed | Connection type |
---|---|---|---|
Frontier | $109.99/mo. | 7,000 Mbps | Fiber |
AT&T | $155.00/mo.** | 4,700 Mbps** | Fiber |
Xfinity | $100.00/mo. | 2,000 Mbps | Fiber |
*Pricing per month plus taxes for length of contract. Additional fees and terms may apply. Pricing varies by location and availability. All prices subject to change at any time. May or may not be available based on service address. Updated as of 08/26/25.
**Plus taxes (w/ eligible Autopay & Paperless bill). Price after discounts: $90/mo discount for new residential customers and $10/mo w/ eligible Autopay & Paperless bill (w/in 2 bills). Monthly State Cost Recovery Charge in TX, OH, NV applies. Limited availability. May not be available in your area. Call or go to fiber.att.com to see if you qualify. Speeds based on wired connection. Cheapest internet in Michigan
There are a few cheap options available in Michigan, like Frontier’s Fiber 200 plan for $29.99/mo., or Xfinity’s 300 Mbps plan for $40.00/mo. You can also explore low-cost programs that are available for eligible customers based on income, like Xfinity’s Internet Essentials program or Access from AT&T. When shopping for cheap internet options, keep in mind the overall speed and value of the plan rather than just a low price tag. A faster plan for a bit more may provide more value in the long run.
Providers may also offer promotional pricing to new customers, which can save you money for a year or two. However, watch out for price hikes after the promo ends. Bundling can also help you save, especially with providers like Xfinity that offer multi-product discounts. However, not all providers allow you to save when you bundle. Always check your address to find the providers available at your exact location.

How we review internet in Michigan
Discovering the best internet provider in Michigan doesn’t have to be a hassle. Whether you are searching for the fastest speeds or just want a quality Wi-Fi plan that keeps your costs in line with the average internet bill in Michigan, start here. Our comprehensive review process gives you the most accurate sense of which plan will best fit your needs.
Our methodology
We evaluate broadband providers in four categories: affordability, performance, value and customer satisfaction. Each category contains multiple sub-factors, all of which are weighted differently to impact the provider’s overall score.
For each sub-factor, we score all providers on a continuous scale of one to five, relative to the industry as a whole. Because the average download speed in America is currently 290 Mbps, for example, we assigned all plans with download speeds between 100 and 299 Mbps a score between three and four. Xfinity’s 200 Mbps plan received a 3.50 score for download speed, while Spectrum’s 500 Mbps plan got a 3.71.
We only considered standardized data points in our scoring system. More abstract data like consistency of service and brand reputation is still part of our analysis, but we opted to let our writers address them in the context of each review.
Michigan internet statistics
Comparing Michigan internet stats to the broader U.S., Michigan falls behind when it comes to download and upload speed. 99% of Michigan can access high-speed broadband of at least 100 Mbps, but only about 40% can access gigabit speeds. About 90% of Michigan has access to wired internet options, with the remaining percentage only able to access satellite internet. Access to gigabit speeds is mainly focused in urban areas such as Detroit, Grand Rapids and Lansing.
Michigan
- Download speed: 269.84 Mbps
- Upload speed: 38.34 Mbps
U.S.
- Download speed: 285.39 Mbps

Internet availability in Michigan
Most Michigan households have access to satellite (99%) and cable (82%) connections. Less than half can get fixed wireless (42%), 30% can access fiber and 6% can get DSL. Availability for each connection type varies based on your location, with satellite being the only option available to the entire state.
*Availability statistics sourced from FCC National Broadband Map using 100/20 Mbps speed criteria.
Quality of internet access in Michigan
Almost the entire state of Michigan has access to the minimum recommended broadband speeds, but less than half has access to gigabit speeds.

Michigan broadband expansion
Michigan received over $1.5 billion in broadband expansion funding and is actively pursuing infrastructure build-outs in unserved and underserved areas. While it will take some time for residents to see results, there are internet assistance programs like Lifeline or low-income internet provider programs available to eligible customers based on their income and participation in government assistance programs.

Switching from Xfinity in Minnesota to Xfinity in Michigan was ridiculously and unnecessarily difficult.
3/5
Bandwidth seems inadequate. TV programs freeze up and internet responses slow.

I’ve had Spectrum for a long time now, but it seems like in the past few months they’ve had an outage at least once a month and they’ve all lasted well over 2 to 6 hours. And it was not like that when I first started with them.
