Iowa internet at a glance
Iowans have access to satellite, cable, fiber and fixed wireless internet. Available providers include T-Mobile, CenturyLink and Hughesnet — the latter of which provides satellite internet and has the largest network in the state. Larger internet providers also offer bundles for phone and television.
Most widely available providers in Iowa
When it comes to internet in Iowa, satellite internet is the most available option; however, hard-wired internet, such as cable or fiber, is generally preferred where available. Therefore, Hughesnet and Starlink are technically the most available options, but CenturyLink and Mediacom tend to be the most popular picks for Iowa internet due to their increased reliability and speeds. T-Mobile’s 5G internet, while not hard-wired, is also widely available and highly regarded due to its no-hassle setup and fast speeds.
Internet availability in Iowa
Iowa’s median download is 226 Mbps and 76 Mbps for uploads, according to Ookla, but these faster speeds are typically found in more populated areas like Des Moines, Davenport and Cedar Rapids. Meanwhile, there remains a noticeable gap in high-speed internet access when compared to rural regions across the state.
The type of internet connection also varies widely by location. Metro areas have access to fiber and cable from CenturyLink, Kinetic and Mediacom, while rural communities often rely on satellite or fixed wireless (4G/5G) connections from ISPs such as Hughesnet and T-Mobile.
Here’s a breakdown of Iowa internet by connection type, focusing on areas with speeds of at least 100 Mbps:
Filter your results:
Connection type | Availability |
---|---|
Cable | 68% |
Fiber | 64% |
Fixed wireless | 60% |
Satellite | 100% |

While Iowa internet starts around $50.00 – $60.00/mo. for mid-tier plans, two Iowa internet service providers offer plans for less than $40.00/mo. with speeds of up to 100 Mbps (or more). Some ISPs also offer low-cost plans for qualifying households, usually based on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Medicaid enrollment, so check if providers in your ZIP code offer these options.
- Mediacom: $19.99/mo.* for up to 250 Mbps
- T-Mobile: $35.00/mo.* for 87 – 318 Mbps (with a qualifying mobile plan)

Iowa internet customer reviews
Metronet has not disappointed! Installation was a breeze. Only complaint is the electrical situation that they set up. Internet is working great though.
4/5
Installation guy was super super nice … very thorough. Ever since no issues with disconnects or speed being slow. Had to call customer service after the second bill as our promotional rate wasn’t applied (first month was free so that’s why rate wasn’t noticed), customer service took care of it right away and applied a credit to our account.
5/5
CenturyLink doesn’t even have/is able to provide decent internet speeds and services in this area, I can’t even get Netflix titles to play without lagging, websites won’t load on my phone, and forget video games. I get 2 Mbps , and they can’t provide anything faster.
