What is fixed wireless internet?
Fixed wireless internet is a type of internet service that uses broadcast towers to transmit and receive internet signals in the form of radio waves. A small dish or antenna receives the signals and sends them to a modem, which converts them into the internet service you use to browse the web, send emails and stream TV.
Fixed wireless internet relies on antennas installed at your home, which connect to the mobile towers nearest to your location. Your modem will then transfer that signal to your router, enabling a Wi-Fi connection you can access without wires.

According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), fixed wireless internet service is available to about 80% of the U.S. population, and about 50% have access to broadband speeds up to 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload or higher. Fixed wireless internet is mainly available in rural regions of the Northeast, Midwest and Western U.S., with some only covering major metropolitan areas.
While satellite is available in most rural areas, fixed wireless is preferable for faster speeds and lower prices. According to Ericsson, fixed wireless connections worldwide are expected to reach 330 million by 2029. The Wireless Infrastructure Association (WIA) reports that Verizon aims to have more than five million fixed wireless subscribers in 2025, and T-Mobile plans to have 12 million customers by 2028.
Fixed wireless limitations
Although fixed wireless can be an affordable alternative to wire line internet like cable or fiber, there are some limitations to keep in mind — especially if you’re a heavier internet user.
- Speed – Fixed wireless internet will provide slower and more inconsistent speeds than cable or fiber, since signal strength generally depends on proximity to a cellular tower
- Line of sight – Fixed wireless internet service is more susceptible to obstructions than other tech types. Fallen trees, buildings and even terrain can block the line of sight between the cell tower and your home’s receiver, blocking your signal and negatively affecting your internet connection
- Weather – Weather conditions like heavy rain or thunderstorms can impact signal quality, while wireline providers like cable and fiber tend to avoid weather interference
