Xfinity internet overview

With coverage spanning more than a third of U.S. households, Xfinity internet is an option for many, offering some of the cheapest and fastest plans available anywhere. Everything you need to know about Xfinity internet

Just want to browse plans? Jump to Xfinity internet plans

To help you decide if Xfinity internet is right for you, we’ve compiled everything you need to know all in one place. You’ll find info on Xfinity plans (and how they change from one region to another), Wi-Fi equipment, added fees and more below. Let’s start with a quick look at what we like about Xfinity internet, as well as some things to consider before signing up.

What we like:

  • Lots of plan options – Xfinity offers up to seven standalone internet plans, so there’s likely to be an option for every need
  • The fastest max speeds – The Gigabit Pro plan is currently the fastest residential internet plan from any major provider, with speeds up to 2,000 Mbps
  • Free internet security with Wi-Fi equipment rental – Xfinity Advanced Security is free with your xFi router rental, a $72/yr. value
  • Xfinity Flex and Peacock Premium included – Xfinity’s exclusive streaming device and voice remote, plus a subscription to Peacock Premium is included at no extra cost

Things to consider:

  • Inconsistent plan pricing – Xfinity plan pricing varies by region with some areas paying more for the same or similar plan as others
  • Data cap and equipment fees – Equipment rental charges and fees for exceeding your data limit can add to your monthly bill, but it is possible to avoid these
  • Higher pricing for no contract – No term agreement options are available with most plans, but opting for no contract will likely mean forfeiting the lowest introductory pricing

Xfinity internet plans vary by region

Unfortunately, you won’t find the same Xfinity internet plan pricing and term agreement requirements everywhere. Some locations may have a higher price than others for the same speed tier. Furthermore, contract requirements can differ by region, meaning opting for no contract in one region may come with a price increase you wouldn’t see in another.

Pricing isn’t completely random, however, as most in the Northeast and Western U.S. regions will see one set of pricing and contract requirements while many in the Southeast and Central regions will see another.

Finding the right Xfinity internet plan

With all the Xfinity internet plan options, you may be wondering what the best Xfinity plan is for your home. Take a look at our summary of each Xfinity plan below to find the right one for you.

Already have Xfinity internet? Take our Xfinity speed test to see if your home could benefit from faster speeds.

Cheapest plan – Performance Starter

If you’re looking for the cheapest Xfinity plan, that’d be Performance Starter, which comes with download speeds up to 25 Mbps starting at around $25/mo.* These speeds are suitable for internet browsing, email and light streaming, but if you want a little more speed for your money, consider the Performance/Performance Select plan. This plan offers up to four times the speed for $10-$15 more per month, which while not necessarily the cheapest option, provides a bit more value.

Fastest plan – Gigabit Pro

Currently, no residential internet plan from any major provider can compare to the speeds of Xfinity’s Gigabit Pro, which offers up to 2,000 Mbps. This plan is not available in all Xfinity service areas, however, and you will likely find the speed (and price) to be much more than you need. A step down to Xfinity Gigabit will still offer up to 1,000 Mbps – ample speed for multiple users and devices – for less than half the monthly price.

Recommended for most households – 200, 300 speed tiers

Many will find the 200 and 300 Mbps speed tiers to be a significant speed boost from Xfinity’s cheapest plans. These speeds are sufficient for streaming TV, gaming online and more on multiple devices at once over a Wi-Fi connection. And with these plans starting in the $50-$65/mo. range, they are an excellent combination of speed and value.

Xfinity equipment, data caps and contract info

You can expect fees, contracts and data limits from nearly every provider, but where some providers have set terms and conditions, Xfinity does a good job of giving customers options.

xFi Gateway – from $0-$25/mo.

The xFi Wi-Fi device has some nifty features such as free internet security and app-controlled device management, but it will also add $14/mo. to your bill. And if you want elite Wi-Fi service, which includes Wi-Fi extenders if needed, that will raise your equipment fee to $25/mo.

The good news is you don’t have to use Xfinity’s equipment. If you have a device compatible with Xfinity internet, you can use your own and skirt the equipment fee altogether. Going that route, however, may limit the abilities of Xfinity tech support should you have an issue with your service.

Data cap – varies, but probably 1 TB with unlimited available

Like their internet pricing, Xfinity data caps can vary by location, but the most common one we’ve seen is 1 TB/mo. This is a pretty standard data cap, AT&T, CenturyLink and Cox have the same cap on many of their plans. It’s also a lot of data, much more than the average household can use.

Those who like to binge stream TV, especially in HD or 4K resolution, are more likely to approach the 1 TB/mo. data cap, and going over could add fees up to $50 to your bill. Fortunately, you can add unlimited data to your plan for an additional $30/mo., or get it included with the xFi Complete Wi-Fi package.

Term agreements – none or one-year with most plans

With the exception of the Gigabit Pro plan which requires a two-year term agreement, Xfinity lets you opt for no contract, but with a catch. CIn select areas, primarily those with the Central and Southeast pricing, choosing no term agreement will likely raise the introductory price of your plan by $10/mo. or more.

Xfinity plans in service areas in the Western and Northeast regions are also likely to come with no-contract options, but with less price increases than other regions. The exception is Xfinity’s lowest-priced plan, which does come with a higher price if you choose no term agreement.

So what are you really paying with Xfinity internet?

The cost for Xfinity internet begins with the introductory price plus taxes and fees. If you choose to rent Xfinity equipment, that will add $14 to your monthly costs. And if you opt for no term agreement, that may raise the cost $10/mo. depending on the region you’re in and plan you choose.

For example, if you live in Miami, FL and choose the Blast! plan, which regularly starts at $50/mo., then rent equipment and opt out of a contract, you can anticipate a base price of $74/mo. plus taxes and fees.

Regardless of the plan you choose or region you’re in, Xfinity pricing is likely to increase after the first twelve months of service after the introductory pricing period ends. The exact price increase varies by plan and region, but could increase your bill by $20-$30/mo. or more.

Compare Xfinity internet to other providers

If your address is serviceable for Xfinity, you may have additional internet options in your area. Here’s a look at how Xfinity compares to other major providers. You can also select a specific provider to compare Xfinity to in our comparison table.

Internet pricing

When it comes to internet prices, Xfinity is cheaper than most. Their Performance Starter plan, which starts at $25/mo.*, is one of the cheapest broadband options available.

Xfinity also has one of the lowest-priced gigabit options of any cable internet provider, though cheaper gigabit options may be available from fiber providers such as AT&T, CenturyLink and Windstream.

While Xfinity’s plans are relatively low, or at least competitively priced, their equipment fees are a little high. Standard equipment rental is $14/mo. and the premium Wi-Fi service will add $25/mo. to your bill.

Internet speeds

Xfinity does offer the fastest residential download speeds of any major provider, up to 2,000 Mbps. However, these speeds are only available in select locations and, quite frankly, are much faster than the typical household needs. That said, Xfinity has a good mix of speed options in most areas with up to six plans ranging from 25 to 1,000 Mbps.
