What to expect from Xfinity internet service
With more than 29 million broadband subscribers in 40 states, Xfinity is the largest internet provider in the U.S. But that popularity doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best around — it’s often just the most available. Xfinity scored around average in every category of our evaluation.

As a provider that deals exclusively in cable internet, Xfinity usually won’t get you speeds as fast as fiber internet, but they’re still much higher than DSL or satellite. Xfinity does offer a 3,000 Mbps plan, but it’s not available to all customers.
In general, Xfinity’s internet plans provide all the speed you’ll probably need at competitive prices. You’ll have to deal with rate increases after 12 months, but that’s common among internet service providers (ISPs). Xfinity offers seven plans to choose from no matter where you live, so chances are good you’ll be able to find something that fits your needs.
A subscription to Peacock Premium is included at no extra cost, and if you’re new to streaming, Xfinity also includes its Xfinity Flex streaming device with all of its internet plans.
How we scored internet providers
We evaluate broadband providers in four categories: affordability, performance, value and customer satisfaction. Each category contains multiple sub-factors, all of which are weighted differently to impact the provider’s overall score.
For each sub-factor, we score all providers on a continuous scale of one to five, relative to the industry as a whole. Because the average download speed in America is currently 180 Mbps, for example, we assigned all plans with download speeds between 100 and 299 Mbps a score between three and four. Xfinity’s 200 Mbps plan received a 3.50 score for download speed, while Spectrum’s 400 Mbps plan got a 4.16.
We only considered standardized data points in our scoring system. More abstract data like consistency of service and brand reputation is still part of our analysis, but we opted to let our writers address them in the context of each review.

Xfinity internet pricing and speeds
Unfortunately, you won’t find the same Xfinity internet plan pricing and term agreement requirements everywhere. Some locations may have a higher price than others for the same internet speed tier. Furthermore, contract requirements can differ by region, meaning opting for no contract in one region may come with a price increase you wouldn’t see in another.
Pricing isn’t completely random, however, as Xfinity groups its plans into three regions of the country: the West, Central and Northeast. But no matter where you live, you can expect your monthly bill to go up by $15 to $49 after the first year. In some cases, the discount last for two years, and then increases dramatically in the third.
On the plus side, a subscription to the Peacock Premium streaming service is included with all Xfinity plans.

With all the Xfinity internet plan options, you may be wondering what the best Xfinity plan is for your home. Take a look at our summary of each Xfinity plan below to find the right one for you.
Best for most people — 200-300 Mbps
Xfinitiy’s internet plans with 200-300 Mbps download speeds hit the sweet spot for most households: enough speed that you’ll never have to worry about buffering, but not so much that you’ll only use a fraction of what you’re paying for. It’s ideal for moderate internet use such as streaming over a Wi-Fi connection on a couple devices at once.
A cheaper alternative — 50 Mbps
The 50 Mbps isn’t Xfinity’s cheapest plan, but it’s very close in price to the 25 Mbps plan with four times the speed. That said, it’s still best used for light to moderate activity, such as streaming in SD via Wi-Fi or in HD over a wired connection. Peak usage times and connecting multiple devices may lead to excessive buffering and lower picture quality.
Best for bigger households — 800-900 Mbps
Download speeds up to 800-900 Mbps will accommodate an array of bandwidth-hungry devices all streaming, gaming or downloading at once. And with 25 Mbps of upload speed, it should be able to handle a few people working and learning from home at the same time.
Best for smart homes and serious gamers — 1,200 Mbps
The Xfinity Gigabit plan comes with enough speed to handle anything the average household uses the internet for and more, with plenty of speed remaining. Gig speeds give you peace of mind knowing you can stream in HD or 4K, game with little-to-no lag and use a multitude of smart home devices virtually worry-free.
Fastest Xfinity plan — 2,000 – 3,000 Mbps
Currently, no residential internet plan from any major provider can compare to the speeds of Xfinity’s Gigabit Pro, which offers up to 2,000 or 3,000 Mbps, depending on where you live. This plan is not available in all Xfinity service areas, however, and you will likely find the speed (and price) to be much more than you need. A step down to 1,000 Mbps — ample speed for multiple users and devices — costs less than half the monthly price.
Internet Essentials program
Xfinity offers an inexpensive internet plan for low-income households. It gets you 50 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speeds for just $9.95/mo. plus tax. You can also opt for a 100 Mbps plan for $29.95/mo. To enroll in Internet Essentials, you’ll need to qualify for a government program like the National School Lunch Program, housing assistance, Medicaid, SNAP, SSI or a Federal Pell Grant.
If you qualify, you can also take advantage of the government’s Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which provides $30/mo. towards internet, plus a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer or tablet from participating providers. If you sign up for both programs, you’ll essentially be getting internet completely free.

Shop Xfinity Internet, TV, and Phone plans
Xfinity offers a variety of plans for internet, TV and phone.

Installation, contracts and data caps
You can expect fees, contracts and data limits from nearly every provider, but where some providers have set terms and conditions, Xfinity does a good job of giving customers options.
Installation: $40 or free self-installation
Xfinity charges a one-time fee of $40 if you want to have a professional come to your home to set up your internet. But you can also choose the free self-installation option, where Xfinity sends you a Getting Started kit and you set up service on your own using the Xfinity app.
Term agreements: None or one-year with most plans
With the exception of the Gigabit Pro plan which requires a two-year term agreement, Xfinity lets you opt for no contract, but with a catch. In some areas, choosing a no-term agreement will likely raise the introductory price of your plan by $10/mo. or more.
Xfinity plans in service areas in the Western and Northeast regions are also likely to come with no-contract options, but with less price increases than other regions. The exception is Xfinity’s lowest-priced plan, which does come with a higher price if you choose no term agreement.
Another option if you are looking for no contracts and cheap internet is the Xfinity Prepaid Internet plan. With this plan, you get refurbished internet equipment for a one-time fee of $35 and 20 Mbps for $45/mo. or $15/week. This plan does not require any contracts.
Data cap: Varies, but probably 1.2TB with unlimited available
Like their internet pricing, Xfinity data caps can vary by location, but the most common one we’ve seen is 1.2TB/mo. This is a pretty standard data cap; AT&T, CenturyLink and Cox have the same cap on many of their plans. It’s also a lot of data, much more than the average household will need.
Those who like to binge stream TV, especially in HD or 4K resolution, are more likely to approach the 1TB/mo. data cap, and going over could add fees up to $50 to your bill. Fortunately, you can add unlimited data to your plan for an additional $30/mo., or get it included with the xFi Complete Wi-Fi package.
Expert tip: So, what’s the final cost with Xfinity internet?
The cost for Xfinity internet begins with the introductory price plus taxes and fees. If you choose to rent Xfinity equipment, that will add $14 to your monthly costs. And if you opt for a no-term agreement, that may raise the cost $10/mo. depending on the region you’re in and plan you choose. Also note that professional installation costs a one time fee of $40.
For example, if you live in Miami, FL and choose the Blast! plan, which regularly starts at $50/mo., then rent equipment and opt out of a contract, you can anticipate a base price of $74/mo. plus taxes and fees.
Regardless of the plan you choose or region you’re in, Xfinity pricing is likely to increase after the first 12 months of service after the introductory pricing period ends. The exact price increase varies by plan and region, but could increase your bill by $15-$30/mo.
Xfinity offers industry-leading Wi-Fi features
Xfinity stands out among internet providers when it comes to its Wi-Fi equipment, phone app and mobile hotspots. Here’s what’s available to Xfinity internet customers.
xFi Gateway: $14 – $15/mo.
The xFi Wi-Fi device has some nifty features such as free internet security and app-controlled device management. It’s included with many plans for the first year, but after that it will add $14/mo. to your bill. And if you want elite Wi-Fi service, which includes, modem, router, security and Wi-Fi extenders, Xfinity’s xFi Complete costs $15/mo.
The good news is you don’t have to use Xfinity’s equipment. If you have a router compatible with Xfinity internet, you can use your own and skirt the equipment fee altogether. Going that route, however, may limit the abilities of Xfinity tech support should you have an issue with your service.
Xfinity app
Most internet providers have an app, but Xfinity’s is actually useful. You can use it to check your connection, restart your modem, check your internet security status and even set parental controls for specific devices.
Wi-Fi hotspots
As an Xfinity customer, you’ll have access to millions of their hotspots around the country. Once you connect to one by signing into your Xfinity account, you can automatically connect to Wi-Fi whenever you’re out of the home and in an Xfinity service area, a nice perk that helps you save your cellphone data.

Pricing
When it comes to internet prices, Xfinity is cheaper than most. Its cheapest plans are some of the most affordable from any provider, although the price almost doubles in the second year. Xfinity also has one of the more affordable gigabit options of any cable internet provider, though cheaper gigabit options are available from fiber providers such as AT&T, CenturyLink and Windstream.
While Xfinity’s plans are relatively low, or at least competitively priced, their equipment fees are a little high. Standard equipment rental is $14/mo. and the premium Wi-Fi service will add $15/mo. to your bill. Call in to see if there are any Xfinity internet promotions available for new customers.
Internet speeds
Xfinity does offer the fastest residential download speeds of any major provider, up to 3,000 Mbps. However, these speeds are only available in select locations and, quite frankly, are much faster than the typical household needs. That said, Xfinity has a good mix of speed options in most areas with up to seven plans ranging from 50 to 3,000 Mbps.
How to bundle Xfinity internet and cable TV
Xfinity’s bundles are some of the most affordable internet and TV packages around, especially if you don’t need every channel. All customers get $10/mo. off their bill for each service they bundle with Xfinity.
You can add a basic lineup with 10+ local networks, the Starter package with 140+ channels or the top package with 240+ channels. Xfinity also has home phone or cellphone service that you can add to the mix. In general, you can expect to add around $10 to $40 to your bill if you want to include TV service.
Xfinity customer service: Above average
Xfinity’s customer satisfaction ratings usually fall in the middle of the pack. The American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) scored Xfinity internet a 67/100 in 2021, which is third-best of any internet provider. Consumer Reports readers gave it a 65/100, with low marks for technical support and value.
While these scores aren’t amazing, Xfinity does have a reputation for being more flexible than other providers about the deals they offer to existing customers. If you have an issue with your bill or service, there’s a decent chance that a phone call to Xfinity’s customer service can solve the issue.
