Not in a Fios service area? Consider Verizon High Speed Internet

Verizon Fios isn’t available in all Verizon service areas, but your address may still qualify for Verizon High Speed Internet (HSI) with download speeds up to 15 Mbps. As a DSL service, Verizon HSI uses existing telephone lines to deliver internet to more areas, including many rural locations.

Verizon HSI offers a reliable connection for browsing the web, email and checking social media. Like Verizon Fios Home Internet plans, Verizon High Speed Internet plans are contract-free.

Verizon Fios Home Internet plans

Verizon internet is available in nine states in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region. Many rural areas have access to Verizon’s DSL network while select metro locations, including Washington D.C., are eligible for Verizon Fios.

Verizon is a consistent leader in customer satisfaction, recently receiving the title of “Best internet provider in the East region” from J.D. Power for the seventh year in a row.1 There are many reasons why so many internet users are pleased with Verizon, but the service may not be for everyone.

Is Verizon the right internet service provider (ISP) for your home? Take a look at our breakdown of Verizon internet plans, equipment, fees and more below to help you decide.

What we like

  • 100% fiber-optic network – Verizon Fios features fast download speeds (the lowest Fios plan is 200 Mbps), near-symmetrical upload speeds and exceptional connection reliability
  • No contracts – Which means no obligations and no early termination fees
  • High customer satisfaction – J.D. Power has consistently ranked Verizon highest among internet providers in the East region1

Things to consider

  • Fios not available in all Verizon service areas – In some locations, Verizon High Speed Internet, a DSL service, may be the only option with max speeds around 15 Mbps

Choose the right Verizon Fios speed for your home

Verizon Fios comes with three download/upload speed options: 200/200 Mbps, 400/400 Mbps and up to 940/880 Mbps. If you’ve shopped for Verizon Fios in the past, you may have seen 100 and 300 Mbps plans instead. Those plans are no longer available as Verizon recently increased their Fios speed tiers (without raising the starting price).

When it comes to speed and reliability, you really can’t go wrong with any Verizon Fios plan. According to speedtest.net, average download speeds were 138 Mbps for U.S. households in May 2020, which is below what Verizon offers with their lowest Fios plan (200 Mbps). And while the Fios 200 plan comes with plenty of speed, some may find the 400 or 940/880 Mbps plans to deliver a better experience.

Fios 200/200 – Best for basic internet use, email and browsing the web

Verizon’s lowest-priced Fios plan provides all the speed you’d need for browsing social media, shopping online, reading news sites and staying in touch with friends and family via email.

Speeds of 200 Mbps can also support online gaming (Google Stadia recommends at least 10 Mbps) and streaming in 4K (FCC recommends at least 25 Mbps). Keep in mind, however, that using Wi-Fi and connecting multiple broadband-hungry devices to your network will slow your speeds, so you may want to consider a faster plan for a more seamless gaming and streaming experience.

Fios 400/400 – Best for moderate internet use, gaming and streaming

Offering double the speed than the lower plan for only $20/mo. more, the Fios 400 plan delivers ample speed for the price.

Download speeds of up to 400 Mbps are ideal for gaming online and streaming video and music on multiple devices, even over a Wi-Fi connection. If you’ll be using your Wi-Fi connection throughout your home, consider the Fios Router and Wi-Fi extenders for a strong, wall-to-wall connection.

Fios 940/880 – Best for heavy internet use, gaming and working from home

Starting at $79.99/mo., Verizon’s up to 940/880 plan is one of the more affordable gigabit plans out there.

Gigabit speeds may be faster than the average household needs, but serious gamers and telecommuters who need a fast, reliable connection will definitely appreciate the added speed.
