Tips for getting accurate Optimum speed test results

Before starting your test, there are a few steps you’ll want to take to ensure it is accurate. These steps are not necessary to take the test. 

• Connect your computer directly to the modem using an Ethernet cable. If your internet plan advertises speeds above 100 Mbps, use a Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat7 Ethernet cable for the best results.
• Disconnect any other devices that use the internet. This includes any device that may be connected to your Wi-Fi network, such as smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, Wi-Fi enabled cameras, etc. These devices can use up bandwidth and interfere with your test results, even if you aren’t actively using them.
• Close any apps or web pages on your computer that may be using up bandwidth, such as video and music streaming apps or sites.

How to fix slow internet

Here are a few things you try to improve your internet connection:

• Restart your equipment – Usually, the first thing you should try when you’re experiencing internet issues is to reboot your equipment. Unplug both your modem and router for 10 – 20 seconds then plug them back in.
• Optimize your router settings – Routers have different settings you can test out depending on your internet activities. Some routers have entertainment settings that prioritize bandwidth while you game or stream. You can also play with your Request to Send (RTS) thresholds to improve your Wi-Fi.
• Upgrade your equipment – Upgrading outdated equipment can improve your internet connection. If your equipment is out of date and cannot support your current Wi-Fi speed, your connection will be slower than what you are paying for.
• Reconfigure router antennas – If your router has external antennas, try moving them around at different angles to improve your Wi-Fi signal.
• Add a Wi-Fi extender to your network – Purchasing a Wi-Fi extender to add to your home network can help extend your Wi-Fi coverage to hard to reach areas of your home.
