Why choose Mediacom internet?

Mediacom is the fifth largest cable internet provider in the U.S., offering high-speed internet across 22 states, many in the Midwest and South. Those in Mediacom service areas can enjoy fast speeds, whole-home Wi-Fi connectivity and high data allowances.

If you’re in or moving to a Mediacom service area, you may be wondering if Mediacom is right for you, and if so, which plan is best for your home. We cover everything you need to know about Mediacom internet below to help you decide.

What we like

  • Fast speeds – Gigabit speeds are available in 94% of Mediacom service areas, according to the FCC
  • Wi-Fi 360 – Extends your Wi-Fi range to boost connectivity throughout your home
  • High data allowances – With data caps up to 6,000 GB, Mediacom has some of the highest data allowances we’ve seen (that aren’t unlimited)

Things to consider

  • One-year contract – Your plan is likely to come with a one-year contract, and changing or canceling your service before it’s up could result in an early termination fee
  • Activation fee – Granted, it’s a low, one-time fee included with the initial cost, but it’s a fee that we don’t see from most providers

Choosing a Mediacom plan

Like most cable internet providers, Mediacom offers a variety of internet plans. Finding the right one for your home depends on what you plan to use the internet for, how many people/devices will be connected and what you’re willing to pay for service.

Mediacom internet equipment, data caps and fees

Taxes and fees will come with any internet service, but the good news for Mediacom customers is that the added fees aren’t anything too extreme. In fact, you’ll find Mediacom’s fees and data caps to be more favorable than many other large providers.

Mediacom internet equipment

  • Modem rental fee: $11.50/mo.
  • Xtreme Wi-Fi 360: $5/mo.
  • Wi-Fi extenders: $2.99/mo.

Standard Wi-Fi service from Mediacom comes with a $11.50/mo. modem/router rental fee, or you can use your own compatible equipment and avoid the fee altogether.

Xtreme Wi-Fi 360 is an optional, enhanced Wi-Fi service designed to extend Wi-Fi coverage to places where a single router won’t always reach, such as far corners of the house or separate floors. Electing to upgrade your Wi-Fi service will add $5/mo. to your bill, plus $2.99/mo. for any Wi-Fi extenders that you may need.

Mediacom data caps

  • Internet Access 60: 60 GB/mo.
  • Internet 60: 400 GB/mo.
  • Internet 100: 1,000 GB/mo.
  • Internet 200: 2,000 GB/mo.
  • Internet 500: 4,000 GB/mo.
  • Internet Gig: 6,000 GB/mo.

Unlimited data would be ideal, but Mediacom’s data caps give you a lot of room to work with. Apart from the two 60 Mbps plans, Mediacom’s data caps are the same or higher than other providers. The 1,000 GB/mo., or 1 TB/mo., that comes with Internet 100 is already significantly more than the average household will use in a month, and the 6,000 GB/mo. included with Internet Gig is virtually unobtainable.

Additional Mediacom internet fees

  • Data overage fee:$10 for each 50 GB block
  • Activation fee: $10
  • Early Termination Fee: Up to $240 for two and three year agreements and up to $120 for one-year agreements

If you do happen to go over the hefty data limit, you probably spent the better half of the month binge watching everything you could in 4K resolution. Unfortunately, you can also anticipate an extra $10 applied to your bill for each block of 50 GB required to satisfy your overage. So if you went over by 55 GB, that’ll be an extra $20 fee.

The Activation Fee is a one-time upfront cost and appears to be unavoidable, but at least it’s only $10.

Many Mediacom plans do not require a contract, but if you do have one it’d be in your best financial interest to avoid canceling service before the contract expires. Otherwise, you could incur an Early Termination Fee of up to $120 or more.
