Why choose Cox internet?

At Allconnect, we work to present quality information with editorial integrity. While this page may contain offers from our partners, our opinions are our own. Here’s how we make money.
Cox internet plans are available in 18 states, including Arizona, California and Louisiana. Cox Communications is the third-largest cable internet provider, covering 1/12 of U.S. residents in major cities such as San Diego, Phoenix, New Orleans and Oklahoma City, as well as virtually all of Rhode Island.
If you live in or are moving to a Cox-serviceable area, you’ll have up to five internet plans to choose from, plus many bundling options that could save you on the monthly costs of multiple home services.
Is Cox internet the best service for your home? We cover plan and service details, as well as how Cox compares to other providers, below to help you decide.
What we like
Plan options for everyone – Cox speed tiers range from 10 to 940 Mbps, so there’s a plan for virtually every need.
Panoramic Wi-Fi – A powerful easy-to-use modem/router combo for a relatively low monthly rental fee.
Elite Gamer service – Cox is the only provider to offer an add-on designed to reduce ping and lag, which is essential to any online gamer.
Great discounts for bundling – If you need more than just internet, Cox is one of the most generous providers when it comes to bundle discounts.
Things to consider
One-year contract – Moving or canceling service before the contract period ends may result in early termination fees.
Data cap and overage fees – It will take a lot of internet use to go over the 1 TB/mo. data cap, but doing so could add $10 to your bill for every 50 GB you go over, up to $50.
Average customer satisfaction scores – The American Customer Satisfaction Index gave Cox a 62/100 in 2020, up three points from last year but still trailing many of the major internet providers.

Best Cox internet plans
When choosing an internet plan, consider the size of your household, the number of internet users, their activities and how many devices are usually connected to the network.
Cox Internet Start 10
Best for light internet browsing
Speeds of 10 Mbps technically aren’t considered “broadband,” which the FCC defines as download speeds of 25 Mbps or higher. That’s not to say this plan is without use, however. If you just need a reliable connection for browsing the web and checking social media on a couple devices, a low-cost plan like the Cox Internet Starter may be perfect for you.
Cox Internet Essential 50
Best for streaming on 1-2 devices
Streaming services such as Netflix and AT&T TV recommend speeds of 5-25 Mbps, which the Cox Internet Essential plan has covered. Keep in mind that using Wi-Fi and connecting multiple devices can slow your speeds. So if you plan to stream over Wi-Fi on a streaming device and mobile devices, you may want to consider a faster plan.
Cox Internet Preferred 150
Best for gaming and streaming on 3-4 devices
According to speedtest.net, the average U.S. home recorded download speeds of 138 Mbps in May 2020, so this plan should put you right on par with average speeds across the U.S. This is also the lowest plan that is eligible for the Elite Gamer add-on, so if that’s something you’re interested in, this plan is where you should start. Even without the gamer add-on, 150 Mbps should make for a seamless gaming and streaming experience on a few devices.
Cox Internet Ultimate 500
Best for gaming, streaming in 4K on multiple devices
Speeds of up to 500 Mbps are plenty for the average household, offering enough speed for simultaneous gaming and streaming on multiple devices, even over a Wi-Fi connection. These speeds are also ideal for streaming in 4K — just keep an eye on your data cap as 4K streaming can eat up a lot of your data.
Cox Internet Gigabit
Best for guaranteeing ample speed for all
If you don’t want to worry about having enough speed for everyone in your home, gigabit speeds like you get with Cox Gigablast are the way to go. The Cox Panoramic Wi-Fi device will beam high speeds to much of your home, but you may want to add Wi-Fi extenders to ensure they reach every corner.
Additional benefits of Cox internet service
There’s more to Cox internet plans than speed options. Here are a few reasons why Cox is one of the top cable internet providers.
Panoramic WiFi
An exclusive Cox feature that delivers enhanced Wi-Fi throughout your home. Don’t worry about dead zones in your home when you have the Panoramic Wi-Fi Gateway to provide wall-to-wall Wi-Fi to every room in your house.
Equipment and installation
Rent only the equipment that suits your needs, whether that’s a modem, router or a Panoramic Gateway. You can select Pro Connect or Easy Connect (self-installation) for most of your Cox internet services.
Cox WiFi Hotspots
Find over three million Cox Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide so you never have to worry about using your cellular data when you’re on-the-go.
