Tips for getting accurate CenturyLink speed test results

Before starting your test, there are a few steps you’ll want to take to ensure it is accurate. These steps are not necessary to take the test. 

• Connect your computer directly to the modem using an Ethernet cable. If your internet plan advertises speeds above 100 Mbps, use a Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat7 Ethernet cable for the best results.
• Disconnect any other devices that use the internet. This includes any device that may be connected to your Wi-Fi network, such as smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, Wi-Fi enabled cameras, etc. These devices can use up bandwidth and interfere with your test results, even if you aren’t actively using them.
• Close any apps or web pages on your computer that may be using up bandwidth, such as video and music streaming apps or sites.

Internet speed recommendation

A good internet speed on average is 25 Mbps of download speed and 3 Mbps of uploading speed. With 25 Mbps, you can do the basic things like stream on YouTube or Netflix, attend Zoom meetings, and play games up to two devices.

However, if you are looking to stream HD video on multiple devices, download large files, or play games on multiple devices simultaneously, then it is recommended to get 40-100 Mbps or more.

How the CenturyLink speed test works

The CenturyLink speed test will check your internet speed to the modem or router. You will need to plug your computer into your modem directly with an Ethernet cable. You can then run the test on your computer.

The CenturyLink speed test will show you the exact speed you are getting from your internet. The algorithm will then find the average of the fastest download and upload rates during your test from your location. Although your results may vary depending on the time of your test, you can run several tests at different times per day to get an accurate reading and help you understand if there is an issue with your broadband service.

Do you have the right speed?

A “good” internet speed is one that can support your online activities and connected devices without excessive lagging or load times. Any download speed 25 Mbps or higher is considered “broadband,” but many households find speeds around 100 Mbps to be a “good” speed.
