The three largest internet providers in New York, NY are Verizon, Spectrum and Optimum.
Verizon offers DSL internet throughout NYC. Verizon Fios, a 100% fiber connection, offers service primarily in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island. Verizon DSL services may be available in New York, NY locations where Verizon Fios is not yet offered.
Spectrum cable internet services are available primarily in Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. Optimum covers many areas where Spectrum is unavailable, including the Bronx and Brooklyn.
RCN also offers cable and fiber internet service in select areas of Manhattan and Jackson Heights, but availability is limited. Xfinity offers internet in areas just outside of NYC, with primary coverage just west of the city in New Jersey.

Verizon Fios Gigabit service offers up to 940 Mbps throughout much of New York, NY. Spectrum’s fastest speeds, up to 940 Mbps, are available primarily in Staten Island and Queens.

New York, NY Wi-Fi hotspots
Whether you’re out and about or just visiting, there are a few public places where you can access free Wi-Fi service in New York City. Keep in mind that these networks are often public, so it’s good to avoid online activity that involves passwords or sensitive information when connected to free Wi-Fi networks.
Here are a few public places where you can find free Wi-Fi in NYC:
- Public parks including Central Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park
- Any underground subway station
- Most coffee shops including Coffee Project NY and Odd Fox Coffee
- Grand Central Library and other New York public libraries
