Fast internet speeds are great, but the fastest plans available might not be the internet deal you’re looking for if it delivers way more speed than you need.
Consider your internet activities and determine what internet speed you really need. Then, shop plans and internet bargains in your area that best match those speeds. This way, you’re likely to get a connection fast enough to handle your favorite online activities without overpaying for speeds you won’t use.

Military and student discounts
CenturyLink internet military discounts
CenturyLink’s website says it offers discounts to “men and women of the United States Armed Forces,” but because promotions are constantly changing, you’ll have to call them directly at 1-877-246-1518 to find out what’s available. Unfortunately, when we called them, a representative told us that they aren’t currently offering any military discounts.
Cox internet student discount
Cox’s Connect2Compete program offers discounted internet plans up to 50 Mbps for just $9.95/mo. for families who have at least one K-12 student and participate in a government assistance program like the National School Lunch Program, SNAP, TANF or Section 8 Project-Based Rental Assistance.
Mediacom student discount
Like Cox, Mediacom also participates in the Connect2Compete program. Qualifying households can get an internet plan with download speeds up to 25 Mbps for just $9.95/mo.
Verizon internet military discount
Verizon Fios internet plans are all discounted for all active duty military members and veterans. Here’s what you’ll get:
- $5 off/month on 200 Mbps
- $10 off/month on 400 Mbps
- $15 off/month on Gigabit Connection
All branches of the U.S. military are eligible, including Air Force, all military reserves and National Guard, Army, Cadets, Coast Guard, commissioned officers of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, commissioned officers of the United States Public Health Service, Marines, Navy and veterans of all branches.
Xfinity internet military and student discount

Many providers, including AT&T, Cox and Spectrum also offer discounted pricing deals on TV and internet bundles.
How can I lower my internet bill?
Ways to lower your internet bill include: Use your own internet equipment; downgrade your plan; switch to a new internet provider; call your provider and ask for a lower rate
How can I access free internet?
Aside from logging in at free public Wi-Fi spots, you may be able to take advantage of free internet from sources such as FreedomPop or NetZero. These ISPs typically come with highly limited speeds and data allowances, but can serve as a free connection if you aim to use the internet for little more than sending an email.
Can senior citizens get free internet?
While no internet providers offer free internet plans specifically for seniors, many have lower-priced options for seniors, veterans and low-income households. Learn more about internet deals for seniors, and contact your local internet provider to ask about specific deals available for your household.
