The cold weather is bringing kids back indoors, which can make playtime and entertaining a little more difficult for parents. However, children’s fascination with technology and the Internet can help ease stress, especially when you find appropriate online games for your children to play via high-speed internet services. Additionally, parents can use Internet games to help keep their children’s minds bright and alert during the winter breaks or if they’re stuck inside because of frosty weather.

From educational to just silly, the Internet offers tons of free and paid gaming options for children of all ages. Many television channels, like Nickelodeon, Disney and PBS KIDS, offer Internet games based on popular cartoon or television shows, so children can interact with their favorite characters.

School-age children can explore fun and educational games at, including math and reading activities. The site also offers parent/children games, comics and classic games like mad libs, tick-tack-toe and Sudoku. Nickelodeon, Disney and PBS KIDS are also great sites for school-age children.

For the younger kids, Sesame StreetJumpStart, Disney Junior and Nick Jr. offer games targeted for preschool minds and abilities. Through Sesame Street’s website, children can interact with Big Bird and Elmo, practice counting and coloring, and learn the alphabet. JumpStart offers a virtual world for children age 3 to 6, where players can create avatars, adopt virtual pets and safely interact with others. Nick Jr. offers a variety of free and paid games, some of which allow parents to track their child’s progress via educational tools.

Older children can find games suited to their interests and abilities at Candystand and Gamehouse, which recently combined with RealArcade. Both Candystand and Gamehouse offer varieties of activities, including arcade, sports, card, puzzle, racing, multi-player, classic, strategy and word games.

As with all internet activity, it’s important to monitor your children’s activity for safety and make sure they take breaks from sitting in front of the computer screen.
