Are Rented Routers and Modem Worth It?
They say if you hold a rented internet router to your ear, you can hear the sound of a thousand cash registers ka-chinging. OK fine, nobody says that – and it’s also not true – but that doesn’t mean internet service providers don’t make a pretty penny off of rented routers and modems. According to one estimate, industry titan Comcast rakes in as much as $300 million annually in cable modem rentals alone.
If you rent a modem or router from your ISP, return it as soon as your contract is up and buy your own. It’ll help you lower your internet bill in the long run. But before you do, research which models are right for your ISP and internet speed. We will actually discuss the subject in greater detail in an upcoming blog post, so keep an eye out.
