In recent years, how we watch football has changed nearly as much as the game itself. It wasn’t long ago that a cable subscription got you little more than one, maybe two AFC and NFC games on Sunday afternoon, Sunday Night Football (SNF) and Monday Night Football (MNF) — but only if you had ESPN.
Now, you can watch any and every NFL game on a variety of channels, sports packages and streaming services. Here’s how to watch NFL games, from local contests to out-of-market matchups, all season long.
What channels are the local NFL games on?
On Sundays, the local NFC games are broadcast on Fox while CBS hosts the AFC games. The Sunday primetime game (SNF) is shown on NBC.
These networks are basic local channels, so if you have a subscription TV service, you likely get them all. Even if you don’t have TV service, a set of bunny ears (aka a digital antenna) will probably give you a decent connection to watch the NFL games live.
Ways to stream local NFL games
If you’d rather stream the local games, either because you’re away from the TV or don’t have a conventional way to get your local channels, there are a few ways you can do it.
- Streaming services – DIRECTV NOW, Hulu + Live TV, Playstation Vue, YouTube TV and others offer live TV streaming and include ABC, Fox and NBC with most packages. Subscription to these services can cost around the same as a standard TV service, but most offer free trial periods, which can come in handy if you want to stream for just one Sunday.
- Network apps – CBS, Fox and NBC also have their own network apps that include live TV streaming, provided that you have a subscription TV service. To stream NFL games using a network app, you’ll need to download the app and log in with your TV provider credentials.
- The NFL App – The official NFL App is available for iOS and Android devices and lets you stream live local and primetime games including SNF, MNF and Thursday Night Football (TNF). The app also gives you live score updates from around the league, stats and highlights.
- Yahoo Sports App – Similar to the NFL App, the Yahoo Sports App also lets you stream local and primetime games for free. The app also lets you stream select basketball, baseball and soccer games, so it’s worth downloading during the football season and keeping it handy year-round.
How to watch out-of-market NFL games
We can’t talk about watching live football without bringing up NFL SUNDAY TICKET, so here it is: NFL SUNDAY TICKET (offered by DIRECTV) brings you every live, out-of-market game, every Sunday. It’s hands-down the best way to watch your favorite teams if they happen to not be the home team.
What do you get with NFL SUNDAY TICKET?
NFL SUNDAY TICKET’s biggest selling point is every live, out-of-market game, every Sunday. The package does not include MNF, TNF or preseason and playoff games.
Along with 10-12 live games on Sundays throughout the regular season, NFL SUNDAY TICKET also comes with features like multi-game viewing, real-time score and stats updates and individual player tracking.
DIRECTV also offers NFL SUNDAY TICKET MAX which, in addition to everything you get with the standard package, also comes with live streaming options, NFL RedZone channel and DIRECTV Fantasy Zone channel.
How do you get 2019 NFL SUNDAY TICKET?
DIRECTV is the sole provider of NFL SUNDAY TICKET (you can’t even get it with AT&T U-verse or DIRECTV NOW, even though they’re all part of the AT&T family) and will remain the sole provider through at least 2022.
If DIRECTV is available at your address, you’ll need a DIRECTV subscription to get NFL SUNDAY TICKET. The standard NFL SUNDAY TICKET package can cost around $300 while NFL SUNDAY TICKET MAX will set you back around $400.
DIRECTV offers single or monthly payment options for NFL SUNDAY TICKET and NFL SUNDAY TICKET MAX. New customers can enjoy the 2019 NFL SUNDAY TICKET season at no extra cost when signing up for the CHOICE package or above.
What if DIRECTV isn’t available?
DIRECTV does offer NFL SUNDAY TICKET as a streaming service, but only for students and residents of DIRECTV non-serviceable addresses. Eligible football fans can enjoy a lower-priced version of NFL SUNDAY TICKET, but can watch via streaming only and available games and features may not be the same.
What channel is Monday Night Football on?
ESPN hosts MNF. You can watch live on ESPN if the channel is included with your TV or streaming service subscription. Live streaming is also available at ESPN.com/watch or with the ESPN App but, similar to the other network apps, you’ll need to log in with your TV provider credentials.
You can also stream MNF for free on your mobile device with the official NFL App or Yahoo Sports app.
What channel is Thursday Night Football on?
All TNF games air on the NFL Network. Select games may also be available on Fox or Amazon Prime Video.
Many TV providers offer NFL Network, either with their mid-tiered packages or as part of an add-on sports package. Some streaming services, such as DIRECTV NOW and Playstation Vue offer NFL Network with select packages, but the channel is currently unavailable with Hulu + Live TV.
If you don’t have a TV service that includes NFL Network, you can stream most TNF games via Fox or Amazon Prime Video. To stream with Fox, go to Fox.com/live or download the Fox Sports app and log in with your TV provider credentials. To stream with Amazon Video Prime, log in to your account and search for the game you want to see.
How can I watch NFL highlights and full-game replays?
For those of you who can’t get enough football, you can also watch all the scoring highlights, plus full-game replays.
The NFL RedZone channel is available with most traditional TV and streaming services. While you won’t get any live games on this channel, you can see game recaps and highlights including all of Sunday’s touchdown-scoring plays.
NFL GAME PASS, available on multiple streaming devices and gaming consoles, is a streaming service that offers every live, out-of-market preseason game, plus condensed versions of full games. The service costs about $100 per season.
