Controlling your home security system with your smartphone

Controlling your home security system with your smartphone

With so many home security systems out there, it’s difficult to choose the right one for you and your family. There is one feature that can make or break the deal: remote control from a smartphone. This incredibly convenient feature lets you take your home security into your own hands and manage your wireless home security system on the go. Here, are some of the things you can do if you can control your home security system using your cell phone.

Arming and disarming

By downloading the app to your wireless home security system, you can control your system from anywhere in the world—as long as you have an internet connection. We’ve all forgotten something before leaving home in the morning, but the biggest — and most costly — thing we can forget to do is not arm our wireless home security system.

Now, we have the ability to turn a potentially serious situation around with just a cell phone.

Remote viewing

Viewing everything your cameras see, from your smartphone is another great way to access your wireless home security system remotely. Most models that have remote viewing even send push notifications directly to your phone when motion is detected in your home or yard.

Tilt, pan and zoom

While you’re remotely viewing your surveillance video, some home security systems allow you to tilt and pan the camera to get a complete view of the area; some even allow you to zoom into specific areas to see the smallest details.

Two-way audio

With two-way audio, you can actually see people on your wireless home security system from your smartphone and talk to them like you would with Skype or FaceTime. You can have a conversation with anyone near the system; even say hi to your pets when they’re home alone.

Smart scheduling

Most systems allow you to program a personalized home security schedule through an app on your smartphone. You can set an alarm for the same time every day of the week and program your cameras to point to a specific direction at a certain time of the day.

Best home security apps to consider

Check out some of the many home alarm systems that you can control from your smartphone by just downloading the app.

  • Nest: Sync all your Nest or Dropcam smart home products to keep a close eye on your home.
  • LifeShield: Purchase one of LifeShield’s alarm system packages and then sync your system for ideal remote monitoring.
  • SimpliSafe: Control any SimpliSafe home security system, set mobile notifications and browse minute by minute timelines of video surveillance.
