The 4 best cell signal boosters

There are few problems more annoying than a cellphone cutting out or dropping calls while you are using it in your home. You might even have trouble accessing the internet on your phone with a weak cell signal. That’s where a cell signal booster comes in. This device basically acts as a mini cell tower in your home so your signal is stronger.

What is a cell signal booster?

As the name suggests, a cell signal booster amplifies the cellular reception in a certain area. You’ll need to look at a number of important factors when choosing the right cellular signal booster for you:

  • Which cellphone carriers work with the cell booster brand
  • How large an area the cell booster works in, usually a range measured in square feet
  • Additional purchase features like warranties, financing options or money-back guarantee periods
  • Which types of signals the cell booster works with, like whether the booster is 5G ready
  • If the service is self-install or comes with installation services

How do cell signal boosters work?

Cell boosters pick up a weak signal, boost that signal and then rebroadcast the boosted signal where you need it. To get the job done, a cell signal booster has three main parts: an exterior antenna, an amplifier and an interior antenna.

Anyone who has a weak cell signal in their living space or place of business could benefit from a cellular signal booster. This is especially true for people in rural areas or other dead zones where a tower doesn’t quite reach. Digital nomads in living situations like RVs can also benefit, since they may end up in areas with weak signals.

How we selected our favorite cell signal boosters

In selecting our top four cell signal booster products, we looked at a number of important features. We considered how the price compared to the range covered and whether the device is 5G compatible. Also, we looked at warranty options, install services and additional features like weather resistance. Finally, we took customer reviews from Amazon into account when looking at how well the product performed. Below are our top four choices for cell signal boosters.

Best overall cell signal booster: SureCall Fusion4Home

What we like

  • Lifetime customer support

  • 5G capable

Things to consider

  • Not suitable for larger homes or businesses

If you’re looking for a cell signal booster to handle your home, the SureCall Fusion4Home sits at a very attractive $399.99 price point. It has a decent range of up to 5,000 square feet, making it good for a mid-sized home or smaller office use. It also has a three-year warranty and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Further, it works with all carriers. It handles 3G and 4G LTE signals, but is also 5G compatible.

For ease of use, the product has a quick install guide you can download from the website. SureCall also offers certified installer options so someone can come out and set it up for you if you need the additional help. This model also comes with 2XP technology to double the uplink transmission power, which helps maintain cell signal.

Best larger area cell signal booster: Cel-Fi GO X

What we like

  • Multi-carrier support

  • Great for large homes, businesses and rural areas

Things to consider

  • No warranty mentioned

Sitting at $999.99, the Cel-Fi GO X booster has a nicer price point than other large area boosters. It can cover up to 15,000 square feet, making it acceptable for larger homes, commercial use and rural areas. For some interesting features, it’s weather resistant, has a safe network guarantee and is set up to not interfere with other devices. It also offers different bundle packages for additional signal boosting. It is the only device in our comparison to have 100dB of power, described on the website as an “evolved smart signal booster.”

The device also has good reviews on Amazon. At the time of writing, it has a 4.7 rating. Reviewers talk positively of the support and seeing their phones go from one bar to five. If you want one of the most powerful boosters on the market, this is a good choice.

Best cell signal booster for customization: Wilson Pro 70 Plus

What we like

  • Custom design

  • Runs on a self-optimizing microprocessor

Things to consider

  • Hard to budget for as price depends on custom configuration

The Wilson Pro 70 Plus cell signal booster is another powerhouse for larger areas like small businesses, larger homes or wide open areas in rural settings. It covers up to 25,000 square feet. We listed it as best for customization because it offers a variety of expansion kits and is listed as a custom system design. As such, you might pay based on your system. This system also comes with a self-optimizing microprocessor. It runs with all carriers, is 5G ready and has a three-year warranty.

Reviewers state it takes patience to install. However, if you like to customize, this is a good choice for larger areas.

Best room-specific cell signal booster: weBoost Home MultiRoom

  • Tool-free self installation

  • High price point for limited coverage area

Sometimes you just need to boost a signal in a certain room or a most-used part of the home. That’s where the weBoost Home MultiRoom comes in as the best cell signal booster for the home. It can handle up to 5,000 square feet or it’s rated for up to three larger rooms. It’s 5G ready and can work with all carriers and phones. This version targets cell towers. The weBoost Home MultiRoom also comes with a two-year warranty and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The system comes decently rated on Amazon at 4.3 at the time of writing. Reviewers like that they went from no bars to 4 out of 5. But reviewers stated they had to work a bit on the antenna placement.

However, it can only handle a few rooms. And it does come with a higher price point of $549.99, but there is a monthly financing option starting at $50/mo. The device also lists that it works very closely with the existing signal. So a starting weak signal will only cover a medium-sized room, for instance. Overall, this product is best if you are looking to boost signal in one area or a few rooms of the home.

Cell booster buying tips

As you’re looking for the best cell signal booster, some important tips to keep in mind are:

  • Range limits are listed up to a certain amount of square footage. For strength, look at the dB numbers listed.
  • Go with pre-set packages and certified install options for the least amount of hassle, if that is a concern.
  • Compare the price point to the range. It’s interesting to note that the weBoost Home MultiRoom is about $150 more expensive than the SureCall Fusion4Home. But they both have up to 5,000 square feet of range. Generally, more coverage means a higher price point, but not always.

The bottom line

Cell signal boosters can be a good investment for anyone who has trouble with cell reception in their area. It’s an especially important purchase for anyone in random signal dead zones (we still have those), rural areas or digital nomads who might end up in places with bad reception.
