Are you concerned that a high speed Internet service will keep your children on the Internet for longer periods of time, exposing them to the dangers of Internet predators, identity theft and more? Follow these tips to keep your kids (and your computer) safe regardless of what Internet service you select.

  1. Show kids the difference between ads and content. Warn them not to click on ads, and point out that not all sources on the Internet are reliable.
  2. Warn kids never to give out personal information, including their address and phone number, on the Internet. Set ground rules for using social media sites, like Facebook.
  3. Frequently check the Web browser history to see where your children have been on the Internet. Discuss any sites you feel may be inappropriate. Additionally, viewing "temporary files" from your Program Manager in Windows will let you see what photos, videos and Web pages your child has viewed.
  4. Set ground rules with children as to what they are allowed and not allowed to do online, including downloading music, watching videos, taking part in forum discussions, etc. Also, warn children that while the Internet may feel anonymous, it's really not. Future employers and officials at colleges they apply to may go to their Facebook or MySpace pages.
  5. Teach children the rules of good "Netiquette" and how to avoid cyber-bullies. Children should know how to block anyone that makes them feel uncomfortable on social media sites.

Keep these tips in mind and you should feel more comfortable having Internet service in your home.
