Limit Your Children's Internet Access
Having broadband cable Internet access in your home is undoubtedly useful. It provides fast connection speeds and permits you to do virtually everything on the Web, from paying bills to playing games, or even telecommuting. When you have children, your broadband cable Internet connection can also open up a whole new world that may not be entirely safe for them.
Follow these tips to keep your kids safe on the Internet:
- Keep computers with broadband cable Internet access in common areas.
- Children and teens are less likely to visit sites they shouldn't when they know the computer is in plain sight of everyone in the house. Also, don't be afraid to monitor your children's Internet use regularly.
- Instruct kids not to divulge personal information over the Internet. This includes their full name, phone number, address, where they go to school, favorite hangouts, and anything else that can make them easily identifiable to potential predators. Warn children that people are not always who they say they are on the Internet. Children under 12 (or older, depending on their maturity level) should not be taking part in Internet "chats" or Instant Messaging at all.
- Use software to block inappropriate sites. You can set your Google search settings to restrict access to sites inappropriate for children. But the search filters aren't foolproof. Third-party software can help you set firewalls to limit Internet access for different users in your family.
