Energy Efficiency Rebates & Credits: Where to Start
Looking to upgrade to new appliances, remodel a room, replace a roof? If your improvements make your home more energy-efficient, you may qualify for rebates or tax credits!
Finding the money takes a little research. The ENERGY STAR web site is the best place to start. The site is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.
ENERGY STAR partners encourage consumers to purchase energy-efficient products by offering incentives in the form of rebates, sales tax exemptions, or credits. (ENERGY STAR partners include utility companies, manufacturers, retailers and other companies.)
You can enter your zip code to see if you qualify for rebates on appliances, ceiling fans, heating & cooling equipment, electronics, lighting products, insulation or roof products, doors, windows, office equipment, or water heaters.
You may also be eligible for federal tax credits. This credit — which expires December 31, 2010 — is good for 30% of cost, up to $1,500. Improvements covered may include HVAC equipment, insulation, roofs, water heaters, windows, and doors.
Other improvements may qualify for 30% of cost (with no upper limit). These improvements include geothermal heat pumps, small wind turbines, solar panels, solar water heaters, and fuel cells. This credit expires December 31, 2016. Information is at the Energy Star website.
Forty-nine states also have energy-efficient appliance rebate programs that were supposed to be in place in early 2010
Another excellent resource where you can look up your state is the Database for State Incentives and Renewables website.
Energy-efficient appliances and electronics help you save money on utilities — and these rebates and credits will help you save money when you purchase new appliances, electronics, or make improvements to your home.
